Correct. I had expected Saints to overtake us (like almost
everyone else) but failed to spot that somehow they hadn't. No
doubt "We finished ahead of last year's champions" will feature
prominently in Wilson's review of the season. Assuming he's held
to account to have to do one.

No, lower part of the table as the post alluded to and you’ll

This raises a very pertinent point. Saints were champions last
year. This year - 8th in a league of 10. What happened?
Our supporters sit around griping about our lack of progress as
if we "should" win every game; meanwhile the trajectory of
Saints highlights how quickly fortunes can change, and how
competitive the league really is. Bath have been standout all
season, but will that carry over into next season? And where
were they last season?
The only thing that's certain is that nothing is certain. Apart
from Falcons being at the wrong end of the table.

I have it on very good authority that Barff hit a sweet spot
this year with Contracts, Great Recruiting & Retention, Covid
scenario and played the Salary Cap very well.

It wasn't that long ago that Bath were underperforming every
season relative to the quality of their squad, and to be a
Bristol fan, and persistently so near and yet so far must be
pretty dispiriting. Exeter have gone from doing the double to
propping up the bottom of the table, as have Tigers.
Gloucester's women have been exceptional, their men not so much.
Saracens expect to be contesting the knockouts but as the legacy
of their decade of cheating unwinds they've looked like a
well-coached club in a competitive league and even lost twice to
their lowly local rivals this season.
Sale, to be fair, have been consistently competitive for year
without apparently cheating, but they haven't won much.
The nature of supporting a club is that each year fans of most
of the teams will be disappointed. In a league where the salary
cap is observed, most of the teams will by definition
underperform relative to clubs that are spending similar
amounts.

so are spending under the cap. Bath are spending up to the cap.
And so are we, or so we are told.

Ditto - I'm told that all the Heads of Recruitment know what
Bath are doing and could do the same.

Which clubs have you heard that about?
But also, "spending up to the cap" has a bit more nuance than
that. It generally means that the DoR has licence from the club
owners to spend up to the cap but it doesn't mean they are doing
so in any given year - if they are anticipating some expensive
renewals or a big signing in a future season, they might stay
below the cap.
It's also complicated by the unwinding of the COVID-era
contracts, some of which didn't count fully against the reduced
cap. Different clubs are at different points in renewing these
(or, more likely, a mixture of renewals and player releases), so
some of them might be (legally) over the notional cap while
those who are further along in those renewals might be spending
less overall.
Bath have been pretty open that, as deadly points our above,
they recruited undervalued players and are at the sweet spot
where they are in their prime while still being on contracts
that comply with the cap. They may not be able to keep that
squad together when the next round of renewals comes up, though.
