Out of interest, Riley, Dan and Barbeary were all in the same
year and competing hookers back in the day.
If the coaches think Jerold Gorleku might be one of those
players who can come through quickly to get first team
experience then Turner could be the perfect age/player profile
to help with his development and keep things super competitive.

you're right, the core of our team is in the sweet spot you
asked for - so what's the problem? The original complaint was
that we seem to be missing that core, but we're obviously not.

Petti and Treadwell are direct replacements for Herbst and Lamb
and don't really move the needle age-wise.
The problem is that we've spent the last 2 years signing or
re-signing players who are on their way or over the hill and who
have contributed little on the pitch come matchday. Launchbury,
       Halfpenny, Wyn Jones, Lewies etc.
Harry Williams and George Turner might do better, they might
not. But these are again signings which suggest a sticking
plaster approach, rather than a long-term plan to build a squad
which is will stay together and really challenge.
My gripe is that I'd much rather see us bring in players who are
going to enhance the core, rather than temporary fixes.

Huh? Are you suggesting that 32 is not old for a professional
       rugby player?

Ah, I thought we signed him because he was a good player.

       Superb bit of statting there.

       Less Physical Competition
Japanese play rugby with much less intensity than how it is
played in the international leagues. The less intense pace of
the play makes it more of a mind game and less of brute
strength. Though injuries are unavoidable in rugby, they are not
as frequent compared to European leagues.
Some players are worried that this way of playing might impact
their performance if they return to the big leagues.
       From the rugby paper.

Yeah, it's easy rugby. We all know that. Sure it's fast paced at
times but it's nowhere near as attritional. That's why players
go there instead of France for their payday.

An alternative way of looking at it is that the club is
confident in being able to bring through the current academy
players to become fixtures of the matchday XXIII, but believes
they need a season or two to be ready to step up fully.
In that case, recruiting players who have a couple of good
years' play left in them and can share their experience with the
players coming through, but who won't expect to be starters for
years to come is a sensible move.
