We’ve been apparently learning for most of the season so by that
notion I’m fully expecting next season to be a resounding
       success….

Maybe not but they do seem to have taken action to change things
up. I’m still not clear what we will try and do differently
after all this “learning” that takes place. And a genuine
question as I’m not as up with the details as others on this
board but what do we think is going to make a difference?
Younger guys being older obviously helps. Do we think Petti is
in so we can play CCS more at lock? I’m struggling with where
       the fresh ideas are.

I think Petti is in because he's a superb second row and we're
losing three second rows & replacing them with him and Treadwell
plus Green. I don't think it has anything to do with CCS. But
you kind of hit the nail on the head - it's about fresh ideas.
That's what we can hope for next season, because things can and
usually do change between seasons, for good or bad, regardless
of personnel. Saints for example went from easy beats to
champions just by changing their S&C approach.
Exeter have taken action because they've had a horrific season,
not just a disappointing one. We fell away but were in with a
shout of top 4 a few rounds to go. I think you're
underestimating just how bad things got at Exeter. It would be
mad to expect that sort of ritual bloodletting for a mediocre
       season.
This was Exeter's season, ignoring the semi competitive prem
       cup:
First 6 rounds of the Prem, lost every single match including to
Newcastle. Then they lost heavily in both rounds of the
Champions Cup, including 21-64 at home against Toulouse. Then
the prem came back and they lost two more, but beat Glaws. Then
it was the Champions Cup again - they got smashed at home by
Bordeaux and away to Ulster, who aren't exactly giants. Prem
came back and they beat Saracens, which was a great result, but
followed it up with getting thumped by Bristol, a 2-point win
over Newcastle, a loss to Bath, an absolute humiliation (79-17)
away to Glos, beating Saints, then losing to us and Sale.
So that's 4 losses out of 4 in Europe - 3 of them abject
hammerings - and 14 losses out of 18 in the Premiership,
       including their largest ever defeat.
Thing haven't been great for Quins with a couple of standout
failures but this is another level entirely. Sure, we got
humiliated by Leinster in Dublin, but that was after we
qualified after smashing the Stormers and comfortably beating
the reigning URC champions. We finished 7th in the league, sure,
but we lost 5 fewer matches than them in an 10-team league and
were 19 points ahead of them - that's 6 points more than we're
behind Tigers who finished 2nd this season.
Exeter were so, so bad. We lost two more matches than the teams
from 4th to 6th. We aren't talking fine margins with Exeter.
None of that is to say we don't need changes somewhere. Some of
the signings are promising. Some of the outgoings are gutting.
Sticking with the same tactical plan seems ludicrous, despite
the comments from people who seem to think that any plan is a
good plan as long as it's been detailed. But that last thing is
the one most subject to change.

Let's see what happens with any further incomings. If this is
it, then I'd be hoping to see more of Chis or CCS in the second
row as once you go pass our first-choice pairing of Petti and
Treadwell we're in real trouble with Launchbury (over the hill
and too slow), Lewies (made of glass) and Green (callow).
This is a good example of the "three-year plan" falling down and
my frustration with the recruitment and retention strategy.
We're not building real squad depth at all. No issues with any
of the incomings (apart from possibly Williams) but we're
essentially standing still, and we're in the same position where
injuries to first choices sees a real drop-off in quality.
Our big issues last season was a lack of any real power game or
platform. Our tight-five haven't been up to it with the
exception of Baxter and Irne. We still haven't replaced Marler
so Baxter is in danger of being flogged to death, and we decided
we could do without Irne but we'll keep Launchbury and Lewies.
Titi has been a disaster as tighthead. If there where two
positions which screamed out let's splash the cash and get
quality operators in, it was tightead and loosehead. So far
       we've announced Williams and nobody.
12 remains an issue. Waghorn has looked promising and Kerr had
an encouraging run out against Bristol - it was noticeable the
impact he (and Jibs) made with some hard straight running. But
are Waghorn and Kerr realistically going to go from limited
minutes this campaign to playing 30-odd league and European
games between them? It's a bit of a leap.
With respect to Wilson, I'm just not sure what the gameplan is
to be honest. The home game against Sarries aside, our defence
hasn't noticeably improved, and our attacking game is being
choked-off by kicking too much ball away in the middle-third.
Our best attacking play has generally come from unstructured,
rather than structured play. I don't see any clear style of play
       emerging.

We left ourselves too much to do.
For me, the damaging defeats were early in the season:
Sale 12 - Quins 11: genuinely could've gone either way
       Quins 22 - Bath 24
Saints 33 - Quins 29: comfortable at half time then blew it
Followed up by the 34-34 with Tigers we had to close out.
As you referenced Sarries, McCall made an interesting comment in
a recent post-match interview where he said the gap between
their best and worst performances was just too wide. I think
that rings very true for us too.

He's not wrong. We were 4th. Top 4 was entirely within our
control at that point. Then we had a heavy defeat to Bath, got
humiliated by Leinster in Europe, then battered by Sale on our
own patch. It's clear it did actually go wrong after that
       result.
Those results after we got into the top 4:
       Lost 47-28 away to Bath
       Lost 62-0 away to Leinster
Lost 29-43 at home at Sale
       Lost 40-7 away to Tigers
That's not to say that Bristol running riot against us in Round
7 or Glos nilling us weren't bad performances, just that we
actually had our chance then we blew it big time.

If Wilson was worried about not having first teamers available
later in the season, it makes the sides picked for the Prem Cup
even stranger. Full of first team players (though still rinsed
at Bath). Are we fit enough for ‘the plan’? Is the plan fit
       for us?
