Danny Wilson's longevity. Thoughts ...?

I was interested to see this quote in the news: “We’re proud to
see Danny and Adam gain recognition at the international level,
and the opportunity to develop within a national coaching team
this summer,” said Laurie Dalrymple, the Harlequins chief
executive.
“It’s a reflection of the respect they both have as coaches
within the game, and the dedication to their craft as they
undertake the roles in what will be their off-season. While they
are short-term secondments, it’s a fantastic chance for them to
grow professionally and bring back new experiences that will
ultimately benefit our club.
“Danny and his coaching team have already carefully crafted our
pre-season programme, and we’re fully aligned with the Welsh
Rugby Union on the path ahead. We look forward to welcoming them
back at the start of pre-season, refreshed and ready to hit the
ground running as we prepare for the new campaign.”
Sounds like Wilson is cemented in. Maybe we will be enjoying two
more years of his three-year plan. Laurie must have calmed down
after his reaction to the 80th-minute surrender of any playoff
possibility in fear of the attacking prowess from 90 metres of
the second-worst team in the Premiership (the team that Wilson
coaches being the third-worst, most likely, after next weekend's
fixtures).

Morning all. I think that's right Bucksquin, they're clearly
sticking with him for the next season even though we've
predominantly seen it as a failure. I have tried to be
introspective on it and some points being made re early in the
season, we were losing games by a score so if you turn two of
those into wins, we'd be playing next week for a playoff place
(woulda, shoulda, coulda etc...). I think that's right but we
have fallen off badly in the second half, of the second half of
the season and that's what cost us.
A majority (including me) have also been vocal about the step
down in quality from the first XV to the backups and have seen
that bourne out. We then lose 18 from the squad and I have to
wonder if this is DW saying he'd rather have different animals
in but until we see if there are any new signings of better to
replace them, we'll always be nervous. Anyanwu, Jibs & Hammond
are loses that I believe we could have done without but in
Waghorn & Riley we have good prospects to step in. Hammond we
haven't unless Green & Browne (what happened to the Yellow???)
are going to be backed but with Lewies and Launchbury there is
still a gap there should Petti/Tredders pick up long term
injuries.
The scrum is still excellent, the lineout much better and there
will always be the odd aberration in the set piece. Defence
seems to work in odd games but get pulled apart in others so
still a work on. The attack has looked better in the last couple
of games but nothing like the 2021/22 vintage and that is the
real worry.
So, to answer your main question, I wouldn't worry about
changing him and reshuffling the coaching group. Whatever is
wrong with the attack needs sorting, so if that is nEV, we need
to bring someone in to agitate against him and get it moving
again or move him to HC and let someone else build it up again.
The club are clearly backing him so I'm resigned to seeing what
the new season looks like at Christmas. If our red zone
efficiency has improved and we're conceding less 'simple' tries
allied to some new signings then we can probably feel more
comfortable but if we're 8/9th and lost our first two European
games then time to move on.

I really wouldn't pay any attention to what somebody says in a
media comment.
They can't say what they really think.
E.g. Laurie may be looking at ways of terminating Wilson's
contract. But, he isn't going to say that publicly in case he
finds out that it isn't possible without a big severance fee,
etc.
So, even if there are big bust ups in the boardroom, etc, the
media comment will be to show that everyone is united and one
big happy family.

There's been no noises that he's off (sadly)
The one thing that might come is that he goes full time in the
Welsh setup (obviously he has previous time in that setup at
Cardiff and Welsh u20s) but that's probably wishful thinking on
my part

We need to write to the WRU and explain they need a 3 year plan
and that we dont want to lose him, but it is in the best
interests of rugby, and we suggest him in the spirit of captain
Oates.

I can't see him lasting beyond Christmas if next season is
remotely similar. A few good signings are still needed to
strengthen the squad, but the questions remain about the
coaching side of things. Exeter won't be as poor next season
either as they've got a few hefty signings. Next season would be
the 3rd year under his watch and if we aren't seeing a marked
improvement in results by November you need to ask what else
will be different. We made that judgement with Gustard at the
right time, just hope we don't leave it too late again if it
does duplicate this season.

To be honest if he stays then it's a bit of an indictment on the
board.
We've got worse as the season has gone on, and been genuinely
humiliated on more than one occasion this calendar year. As you
say, pretty inevitable he's gone by Christmas, which means save
a 2022 lazarus event, which seems unlikely, next season is
probably a disaster and the following one a rebuild.
It's not even like Gustard, there were plenty on here saying he
deserved a chance right up until he finally got shown the door,
I don't think I've seen a single poster advocating for him to
stay, and considering the contrary and conservative nature of
several posters that's pretty unusual.

Don’t forget all of the “ Building “ nonsense, another way of
saying “ Don’t look at the results now”
Board are probably happy, finances are getting better, bumper
crowds, no doubt more tickets due to a good few not renewing
Rugby is secondary

We don’t really know what is happening behind the scenes at the
club. Gustard got the boot because he had become unpopular with
a style of play that wasn’t what the players or supporters
wanted. He had also created a playing environment that was
described as toxic. Has anybody heard about any discontent
within the playing or coaching staff that indicates that Wilson
is not liked. We have proved that we can perform but need to be
consistent with these performances. What’s causing this? Is it
players or tactics.

Thanks for sharing that BucksQuin. I think it is clear that
Wilson is staying. It was frustrating that we were so
frequently the team who were the wrong side of the results in
the first half of the season. I also think that we were the
stronger team in a lot of those games: Sale (a), Saints (a) and
Bath (h). But that is arguable. The Racing (a) and Gloucester
(a) defeats were shocking. Especially given how bad Racing were.
Wilson came out swinging at the State of the Nation event and,
to be fair, had some spin to set up his approach for the last
half of the season. Mainly that the rotation in the earlier
games will come good in the final stretch. And, again to be
fair, we started with a really good shock win against Sarries
(a). The run of defeats that followed has really caused
consternation and led his reign to be brought into serious
doubt. We were pretty handily beaten by Bath and Tigers away and
Sale at home was really frustrating.
Tabs had a lot of charm and seemed to get our style. He paid the
price for a poor second half to his second season in charge. NEv
going to England didn't help and, well, something else seems to
have happened behind the scenes too! I think Joe Marler alluded
to that in a vague way!
Quins are a team who need love. I don't think our players
respond to hairdryers or being beasted or being told to "do it
my way or get out". I think it gets a short term response but
isn't right for the club. Gustard got improvement but it wasn't
sustained, and we know the rest. I think Wilson has come in the
same way and may need to change his approach to make next year a
success. The improvement in style against Gloucester and Exeter
may be an indication that he has changed his approach. If he is
to stay then I hope so!
