Six Quins Named in England Training Squad

England Men’s head coach Steve Borthwick has named a 33-player
squad for a two-day training camp at the Honda England Rugby
Performance Centre at Pennyhill Park, with 6 Harlequins players
involved in the camp.
Fin Baxter, Alex Dombrandt and Cadan Murley have all been
selected, alongside uncapped Jack Kenningham, Oscar Beard and
Luke Northmore, whilst Chander Cunningham-South will link up
with the squad to continue his injury rehabilitation.
The squad does not include players selected for The British &
Irish Lions, nor players from Northampton Saints and Bath Rugby,
who are preparing for European fixtures this weekend.
The camp forms part of the preparations for the upcoming match
between an England XV and a France XV at Allianz Stadium,
Twickenham on Saturday 21 June (kick-off 3.15pm).

Slade, sigh! Ford only so he's match fit if the Lions need him.
Isiekwe & Heyes when you could have looked at younger players in
their positions. Shame for Porter and wEV and a possibility for
Waghorn to get used to the squad. Porter I don't understand but,
let's be blunt, JvP is Borthwick's baby so rather than 5 minute
cameos and the risk of injury, better he has the summer off.

Are Isiekwe and Heyes old? If I had to guess I'd say they're
both mid to late twenties?

27 and 26 respectively. Not exactly ancient
Not exactly ignoring youth at 3 with Alo and Asher in there.
As a comparison with Isiekwe, Batley is 28 whilst Willis is 26.
Kenningham must be on borrowed time at 25

The point being this is a tour used to look at the next players
in those positions and I don't see Isiekwe being that and Heyes
only there because Borethick and Wiggie have worked with him
before. Neither are going to gain 50 more caps in the future.
Why not look at someone else who might?

Strange take. Not meaning to get into too much whatifery but...
Let's say Heyes starts the tour at 3 and Isiekwe packs down at 5
and our scrum and lineout tick over like a well-oiled machine
against the Pumas pack... Suddenly, you're potentially looking
at a situation where you have viable challengers to shirts that
don't currently have a great deal of strength in depth (or in
the case of the 3 shirt, any at all).
Yes, some youngsters will get to run around too - but this isn't
an U20s tour. Personally, I'd absolutely love one or both of
Heyes/Isiekwe to come into their own and stake a claim on this
tour. That's exactly what England need to be successful.

Shame Will Evans has been over-looked again but pleased for
Kenningham.
Can’t see the logic in taking Iseikwe to the training camp -
England already know exactly what he offers and he’s not
offering any genuine international squad depth in the future.

I don't particularly rate Heyes but he's the next cab off the
rank and was that option in the 6N, so it makes perfect sense
for him to be there.
Isiekwe I get, he's not really done much in recent seasons.
Ribbans is a real loss there.

If you stop thinking of this as a development tour, then that
might change how you view the selections.
The RWC draw is after the AIs and before the 6N and England are
currently the last team in the top tier of seeds, just behind
Argentina. Their match schedule running up to the draw is:
ARG (A)
ARG (A)
USA (A)
AUS (H)
FIJ (H)
NZ (H)
ARG (H)
England need to win as many of those matches as possible. Arg,
Aus and Fiji are all around the tier 1 / tier 2 cutoff along
with England and all will be going flat out to take ranking
points off each other.
In that context, it absolutely makes sense to include a player
like Heyes rather than look at younger players. You can also
understand the inclusion of Isiekwe, because although he's not
shone at International level, it would be very high risk to hope
that Clark and Batley can both step up.
I'd expect to see a skew to experience in the Argentina matches,
with more opportunity for youngsters in the USA game.
