I've no issue with this. I'd rather we jettison squad filler and
give academy players a go if injuries hit. And the leavers list
is largely filler or ex academy players who haven't made any
real impact on the first team.
But if you go down the route of trimming the squad and placing
greater reliance on the academy, then you really do need two
quality first team options for each position. I don't think we
have that at loosehead, lock or 12. If these aren't addressed
with incomings, its difficult to see us being competitive over
the course of next season, unless we have a couple of youngsters
who are to the manor born.

I'd agree with much of that, although theoretically we have four
decent locks - the problem is fitness, especially with Lewies.
Scrum-half isn't filling me with much confidence though.
We do seem to be taking a punt on a a fair few academy
promotions paying off.

Scrum half for me is almost sorted. If we do get Townsend, he
will be an upgrade on Gjaltema. Friday once fit will come into
his own, and Murray wouldn’t be any less than probably shag DC
has offered this season.
I think a trimmed squad is fine, but with that you expect a few
more quality additions. We do seem to be hoping to suddenly find
another academy superstar, but the top teams above us strike the
right balance between that and also having proven operators to
do a job but also try and force their way into the normal
starting XV.

I still don't think we have the necessary quality at SH,
especially given how much we play off 9. Our starting 9 is
decent but probably only equal 7th of those at the top 8 clubs.
Friday has great potential but is very young. And being an
upgrade on Gjaltema is not exactly the greatest compliment.

Out of the main squad list of 40 on the offy only 14 players are
truly home grown - involved with Quins at school boy level and
signed pro and stayed with Quins. 6 of these players are
leaving, with arguably 7 of the remaining 8 being either first
choice or close enough. I reckon 14 out of 40 is a poor
indictment of our academy and 8 is terrible. I think the whole
academy set-up needs major attention and I'm glad it appears to
be a part of the famous and widely admired 3 year plan.

Do you really think our squad is competitive? If you picked a
combined Premiership side, which Quins players would get in the
XXIII? Probably Baxter on the bench. Even Marcus would be
struggling to get a bench spot at the moment. I can't see any
Quins players starting.

To reduce the squad numbers and up the quality makes complete
sense but, so far, this is squad reduction only. The one that
is left is yet another downgrade for about the fourth
consecutive season. We won’t win anything with it. My hope is
that we managed to get people like Smith to extend because we
can show him we are bringing in one or two more starters and a
few solid squad members. Otherwise we start next season weaker
(again) despite Petti who is obviously a top signing. Let’s see
as it’s not looking great at the moment.

I'm all for rewarding DC for what he's given the club, but
that's surely taking it too far... Even by your standards!

Just spat my coffee out at that typo, bravo. I don’t think I
could stretch to that though. I’ll stick to just a round of
applause
