Indeed, I was speaking hypothetically. I said at the time that I
was surprised the club had offered a new contract.

Well at least the physios and S&C staff will still have a job
while Lewies is still about. He can’t be the cheapest player to
keep fit.

To defend Lewies, I think he's a massively underrated player, is
great for us when fit, and I can totally see why the club likes
him and wanted to keep him. However, I can also identify with
the sentiment on here that he seems to be injured quite a lot. I
would be interested if anyone has the stats for that,
season-by-season since he joined, to see if they stack up with
the perception. Even if they do, maybe the guy has just been
unlucky. Maybe next season he will be fit throughout.

Absolutely, he's a very good player. You don't get a Springbok
cap by being average :)
It's just a shame that we don't see nearly enough of him in the
quarters.

You can see these on all.rugby, but basically to compare him
with Dombrandt, who has been with us for a season more, Lewies
has played almost 50% fewer matches for us and more than 50%
fewer minutes in total.

The stat I would like to see about Lewies is this:
What is the % of games that we win when he starts compared to
the the number of games that we win when he doesn't.
I get the feeling that our win stats go up when he starts. The
lineout is better. The forwards around him seem to play better.
And, he adds captaincy experience. (I think that we sometime
lack a bit leadership on the pitch.)

Lewies when fit and on a run of games is an asset, more line out
options and a bit more of a cool head (and a better example to
follow). He’s not an amazing captain in the category of Robshaw
or Vos let’s say, more a Paul Volley. Dombrandt may yet grow
into the role but he’s currently as effective as a captain as
that stint DC had (possibly during the Kingston era but can’t
remember).
