Diamond really doesn't come out of it well. From the RFU
disciplinary report (here:
HTML https://tinyurl.com/2j4fswvx
)
"SD lacks insight. He is a robust character who uses expressive
language without thinking about the impact on others hearing it,
or to whom it is directed, or on the interests of the game
generally. Whilst his speech at the Northumbria Rugby Union
Referees' Society dinner acknowledges referees must be treated
with respect, he does not appear to sufficiently appreciate that
it brings the game into disrepute if match officials are abused
or their integrity is questioned ... The Panel were not wholly
convinced however that SD was as remorseful as he said he was.
He has brought embarrassment to his club and in particular to
his representative,"

Liked it! And certainly his response since would seem to bear
that out. It may not be as physically damaging to call officials
that word he used as poking someone in the eye, but overall it
may do more damage to the reputation and ethos of rugby union.

He's often come across as a bit of a bully and certainly not a
pleasant character. No sympathy

Yeah, interesting comment.
He nearly got Sale docked points at one stage for his repeated
abuse of officials. He got a 6 week ban back then, too.
Extremely lucky to get the same again.

A genuine question that I don't know the answer to (so
apologies): is some form of a refereeing course not part of any
formal Rugby coaching courses? Certainly in football, back when
I did my level 1 and 2 (we're going back a bit here), there were
two classroom days purely on refereeing and laws of the game.
Not saying it would help, but I thought / assumed (naively) that
some formal refereeing knowledge would be part of the coaching
curriculum?
Also, on the Brian Moore refereeing chat, the only other
commentator / pundit that I know of who has formally qualified
as a referee I believe is Sara Orchard.

I've done the 2.5 day introduction to coaching course, the
England Rugby Coaching Award (ERCA). It doesn't contain
anything about refereeing and the laws.
There's then an Advanced Award and a Performance Coaching Award.
I'd be surprised if they contain much about refing.

I always thought there was something fishy about that Nigel
Owens’s officiating…
