Williams always set his legs too far back and scrummaged too
long. Propping against huge opponents might actually allow him
to not have to do that. And a lot of the big props in the T14
are very big and strong but not actually good scrummagers
(Tameifuna springs to mind, Colombe is a great example) so he'd
be in good company...
But yes, entirely possible that's helped him and he's turned it
around. Always good to maintain a large slice of hope when
supporting Quins!

I was thinking about this earlier. Genuine question, where does
the faith in Adam Jones's coaching come from? There's always an
active line of "Bomb will sort him out" but I can't really
explain why. Is there a particular player that is testament to
his coaching abilities? Who did he turn from rubbish into
excellent?
Again, genuine question, it's likely I'm missing something
obvious.

I don't think you can point to any one player (though he did
help Collier recover his groove, bring Baxter through and we've
seen visible improvements in Titi over the season), but more to
what he's done for the scrum overall.
The Quins scrum under Jones went from better than average to one
of the top couple in the league while we had Louw and Collier.
It's undergoing rebuilding this year, as you'd expect with
several outside recruits to integrate.
From what I've seen and read of top level scrum coaching, it's
all about the details. Each front row tries to create problems
for their opponents, and there are a number of ways to do that.
Often the difference between the truly great props and OK ones
at any given level is how many of those problems they can solve
for themselves over the course of a game. Something that was
really noticeable about Sinckler and now Baxter under Bomb's
tutelage is that they are very rarely caught out by an opposing
prop twice in the same way, and I can remember games where they
struggled in the first scrum only to turn the tables in
subsequent ones. I think Jones's influence is in giving them the
tools to recognise the tricks they are facing and respond
effectively - but also to help them recognise the flaws in their
opponents' technique and exploit them.
The difference is one of marginal games - a slightly higher rate
of scrums won, a slightly higher flow of penalties in our favour
- but it adds up over time.

When I see we've signed a player, my reaction is often "wow,
what a great signing....that would have been 4 years ago"

He's been much better, from an absolutely horrific start. All
the props have been excellent in the last few games (in the
scrum at least). Shame about the rest.
