I for one am not happy. Can he really say he has justified his
large remuneration? What has he actually achieved?
If he is sensible he will realise that the status quo is not
acceptable and that change is needed.

Indeed. I also hope that in general the game tries to go forward
in a more contructive manner. Sweeney and a number of elements
of the RFU carry some responsibility for where things are but
the other side of the argument coming together in various
factions etc isn't exactly helping to reach a constructive way
forward either. The issue of the Championship is one that needs
a dose of empathy and understanding from the RFU and Premiership
but also an element of realism from the Championship as to what
they want out of things. Just "it works in France" isn't an
answer or an approach that will work so easily in England. The
cash aint there.

One change that I would suggest for the Championship is to allow
them to negotiate their own TV/broadcasting rights.
My understanding is that from next season, the RFU has insisted
that they have better infrastructure for TV cameras. But,
revenue from the broadcasting would go to the RFU.
(I could be wrong about this as my knowledge comes from talking
to a drunk bloke in a pub.)

Apparently there are 1300 clubs with voting rights.
The votes were 466 against 206 for 36 abstained.
45% of the clubs eligible didn't vote.

And part of a wider exercise in clearing the RFU's debt and
building a cash position of £61m, while also committing £30m pa
of funding to the community game for multiple years, something
that previous administrations haven't done (IIRC, they've
historically changed community funding each year depending on
how they've done, which has made life very uncertain for the
community game).
English rugby is a bunch of different constituencies that are
all desperate for cash, and the RFU is the only part of the game
that is profitable (over the RWC cycle). Everyone wants more
money than it can give, so most of the game is going to be
disgruntled with it most of the time.
The RFU in turn has to protect the thing that makes the money
today (England Men), and keep enough to invest in the things
that are going to make money tomorrow (Stadium redevelopment,
England Women [1]). It's not an easy balancing act and I would
argue that Sweeney and co have done a good job of it given they
have had to deal with COVID and the previous leadership team
having spent the RWC 2015 money on a hospitality suite at what
turned out to be the worst possible moment to do so.
[1] and before the naysayers pile in, a close read of the annual
report reveals that one of the reasons that the loss this year
was lower than planned was that matchday sales (food, bev and
merch) held up better than ticket sales in a year when they
didn't have the usual number of matches. The only thing in the
calendar that would have delivered that revenue pattern was the
Red Roses v Ireland and v Black Ferns games; the tickets were
cheap and the stadium wasn't full on either occasion, but it
looks like people don't spend much less than what they'd spend
at a men's game on an individual basis.

Or to put it another way, only 16% of eligible clubs cared
enough to vote against him. Not an insignificant number, but not
actually the massive groundswell of discontent the media have
been making it out to be.

OOI does anyone know if it only possible to vote in person?
Getting someone to Twickenham on a Thursday afternoon/evening
may not be that easy for all 1,300 clubs.

Looks like there were lots of options to vote remotely or
appoint a proxy, though it does require that you actually read
the slide - I had to look twice to find out how to pre-vote
remotely.

By the way, this was accessible from a link at the bottom of Sir
Bill's pre-SGM upvote. None of the links (apart from the votihng
site itself) need a password to access them. I would be willing
to bet that the majority of people sounding off haven't read

While committing to the funding for community clubs is good -
but we shall see if they honour this when things go wrong.
But, the fact the level has not changed in over 10 years is less
impressive. Especially as the Premiership clubs get twice the
funding they used to get.
