Presumably all part of the three year plan… 🙄

It wouldn't surprise me if this is a big motivation for the rest
       of the season.

I will be interesting to know what type of person they are
       looking for.
The thing is that Billy hasn't been doing a traditional DOR
role. So, it looks like they need more or a "management" type
rather than a hands-on "coaching" type of person.
I get the feeling that Billy leaving would have little impact on
the day-to-day running of the team and would have little impact
on the preparation for the next game, etc.
But, it would impact the club longer term as I think that he is
key to recruitment and contract negotiations, etc.

Nice guy and did a good job, no criticisms from me.
That said, if the relevant people are reading this, for the
right figure I could be tempted to go into a new venture.

i agree. Billy was really more a "Director of Rugby Operations"
in overseeing things with a view to the longer term strategic
planning, recruitment, etc, rather than a traditional DoR that
we've seen in the past. IIRC that was the whole idea behind
recruiting him and Gustard in 2018. Gustard would do the
hands-on coaching, planning for the next game, etc, while BM
took care of the other stuff. He only became DoR by default when
Gustard left. This whole season has been him taking less of a
"Front man" role, leaving that to Wilson.
I get the feeling BM is the sort of character who now prefers to
be out of the limelight, so I doubt he'll move into a
traditional DoR role either at Club or Country level. More
likely he'll be lined up to be a "Team Manager" working
       alongside a DoR.

Billy's role was always positioned - except during the
post-Gustard interregnum - as being about everything except the
actual on pitch coaching - recruitment, coach development,
player pathways, facilities, support staff and succession
planning. The original billing of General Manager is quite
telling - Quins seem to have been aiming for something akin to
the GM role in US sports.
You'd hope that as part of that he's written his own succession
plan and they have a good idea of who they might recruit or
promote. Looks like there's quite a lot of change going on this
season and there might be some good options available for once.
My bigger concern is that if he is off to Wales and taking Bomb
with him, who do we bring in as a replacement scrum coach?
In other news, Leicester are apparently looking to sign Paul
Gustard... Though tbf I can see him being a better fit at
Welford Road than at the Stoop.

Billy's role was put together by JK who said that the DOR role
was way too broad to be done effectively by one person. What
with the playing side on one hand and the recruitment,
facilities off field stuff on the other needing more dedicated
time than one person could provide. I remember talking to JK
himself about it on a tour of SSP back when he was DOR.

Strong suggestion in the press he’ll become Wales DOR with
strong likelihood Wilson goes as head coach alongside Adam Jones

Plus NEv off to NZ. Cupboards looking a little bare. Come back
       Joe Gray, all is forgiven!

I wouldn't wish that job on my worst enemy. Good luck to them if
       they go for it!
