Interesting snippet of news on the RFU Community site fixture
list ..
"Big Game date is still to be confirmed due to engineering works
on the railway line"

Bit of a harder sell if it’s not on the 27th Dec. Weekend either
side of it would still get a good crowd, but partly the reason
why it’s so popular is it’s in the lull where people are off for
the holidays with nothing much to do, so a group day out is a
popular choice.

That makes far more sense now. in the post match survey the
week after BG16 the last question of the survey was would you
support a Big Game the weekend before Christmas to the same
extent - I said that I wouldn't be able to bring the same number
of friends who historically support the game between Christmas
and the New Year.
I suspect a game on 20th would struggle to get 50k given
everything else on at that time

Could it be a mid week match. Maybe 29th? Have they held matches
on a weekday for BG game before? Not ideal I know. Or is the
railworks throughout Christmas and new year?

I guess the issue would be the impact on other matches around
Big Game. Could Quins play on Friday night and then have BG17
the following Wednesday? Maybe but I don't think teams often
have 5-day turnarounds. That said, a game on a Friday then BG17
on Thursday is no different to Sunday to Saturday turnaround.

Matches are often played on odd days over the Christmas period,
and Quins frequently have a run of short turnaround games then
too - didn't we have three games in 11 days a couple of years
back?

It's probably yet to be confirmed by Network Rail when the works
are going to start & which lines/routes affected. Far too early
to speculate on what impact this will have on BG17 as far as I
can see.

Yes when Christmas Day has been Sat for instance, there has been
a midweek big game between Christmas and New Year
General principle has been Saturday between Christmas and New
Year where possible, else midweek

Weekend before Christmas wouldn't be a wise move, that is
usually the one everyone is running around like a blue bottom
fly trying to get last minute things sorted out, and its before
payday for many so the month of December financially for some
people might find it harder to stretch things for another
expense of trains/beer prior to getting paid. (Just a thought)

Weekend before won’t work at all, the crowd is people with
family/friends who have no commitments and want a big day out
and something to do between Xmas and new year.
You won’t get people to give up Xmas prep and travel to the game
- particularly with half a week of working days to go before
Xmas day.
