OK, it's my own fault. I clicked on a link from Ruck suggesting
the Lions starting XV. Apparently, Fin Smith is a nailed on
starter at 10. Good Lord...

Can see why. Current England 10 in a side that finished above
all the other options. Finn Russell had the worst tournament in
years. The Irish pair have been pretty poor. The less said about
Wales the better.
If Russell had had a decent tournament the shirt would've been
his to lose

I wonder if Marcus was given a run at 10 he would have been
talked about in the same light

How much of a run does he need? He's got 44(?) caps. 34 (I
think) as a starter, the vast majority of which were at
fly-half.

The majority at 10, yes, but most of those were with Farrell
running the show.
When Marcus was given license to run the team he performed very
well. Unfortunately, he was still rarely given the chance to
finish a game.
Ford outplayed Finn yesterday.

Ford was good, yes. He's a very good 10. We're lucky.
I know that on here this is heresy but Marcus has had some good
games where he personally has played very well. But do England
play better with Marcus or Fin? Or George? It's a nice problem
to have but has Marcus nailed down his spot? Obviously not. And
if you stray off of this board you'll find plenty of armchairs
who think he's a fantastic player but aren't convinced by him
running the game.
It's just a thought.

Finn has been very good and suits England's style of play.
Marcus is undoubtedly a better rugby player, but I never got the
impression Steve trusted him. Had he got the chance to close out
the autumn Internationals I should think he'd have been nailed
on 10 for England and the lions. But he didn't, we lost, and
Marcus took the flack.

Given that the centres should be the two Scottish centres, it
makes sense for Russell to start at 10.
In terms of whether England play better with ford, Marcus or f
smith at 10, it's very hard to say. In a game like yesterday,
any 10 would look good. The game plan against Scotland, most 10s
would look bad
