never worked with Kingston, plus I am all for new ideas from
someone outside of the set up.

Depends on how big a chequebook we have doesn't it?
Franco Smith from Glasgow
Jake White from the Bulls
Sean Evritt is doing well at Edinburgh with limited resources
Clark Laidlaw from Hurricanes - timing would work with end of
Super Rugby season I think
There are loads of options - it's whether they want to come and
how much you pay them to do so.
But Kingston didn't work. Neither did Matson. Neither has
Wilson.
So maybe we actually need to be asking bigger questions about
the board, CEO etc given they are the ones making these
appointments.

And - add Gustard to the list.
Also - some would also say that CoS just inherited a good squad
which won the Premiership and then let the team decline.
Maybe the issue isn't the coach.

A fair point and that’s my worry. Laurie is great but it has to
be said, we haven’t had a winning DoR since Conor. Billy was in
that kind of place for the last prem win I guess.

Yeah v true.
Though Dean Richards and O'Shea were Mark Evans appointments I
believe.
So you can't blame or give credit to the current CEO for those.

I posted this almost exactly two years ago and aside from one
further team having gone bankrupt, I think it still stands....

Additionally, we have to remember the basic maths of the league.
There are just 11 teams and a salary cap that probably 9 out the
11 are spending up to. So aside from a singular marquee player
the squads are very similar in ability.
In football there is a clear correlation (and almost certain
causation) between salaries and league position. You aren't
going to get this in rugby. So success has to come from
elsewhere - strength and conditioning, tactics, crowd/stadium
advantage, academy pathways etc.
But ultimately all teams know this and all are trying to do
those things without, I suspect, huge variance. Is the Stoop a
tough place to come for eg? Maybe. But more so than Welford
Road, the Shed or the AJ Bell in January? Probably not.
Is our academy or scouting vastly superior to any other club? We
have unearthed some rare gems like Dombrant but I suspect if you
went through all the other teams in the Prem, each has their
journeyman-come-good storylines and homegrown kids. The
differences are slight.
And while everyone wants the best coaches, be it onfield or in
the gym, there are many good coaches out there and each club
only needs a handful so the cream rises to the top.
Statistically the Prem is incredibly close. 8 points separate
3rd from 9th. One BP win or one bad loss can have wildly
changeable impacts. And while over the course of a season you
can expect the top 1 or 2 teams to be in the right places, the
last two in the play-offs is often a crapshoot. If we are honest
with ourselves, Quins were not the best team when we won the
league but we won the games when it counted with two amazing
comebacks. These were outliers to league games though rather
than reflective.
All of this is to say that changing coaches might make a
difference, it might not. But differences at this level at tiny
and ultimately only 1 team's fans are going to be happy at the
end of the season. Everyone else will wonder what might have
been.

I think he could potentially be brought on board for forwards
but probably not the main overriding role. My personal
preference would be whoever takes us on probably should have a
more backs leaning take on things. As if we had a more forwards
orientated coach, which then turned into our style of play, then
it probably would need a fair few changes in playing personell

That would be a complete punt on a very inexperienced coach. No
thanks, and that's no disrespect at all to JG.
