And with good reason. They were, after all, the ones who when
faced with professionalism simply washed their hands of it and
let the clubs take over.

To clarify my point around the players having all the power,
that was in reference to when we go franchised. You'll have an
influx of wealthy owners, with no cap, paying the Dupont's,
Smith's, Capuzzo's of this world mega bucks to play in France or
Italy and they will, rightly so, chase the money. It would
achieve a bigger global audience and social media meltdown.
This is also why I'm anti lifting the restriction on England
players having to play in the Prem, else the clubs will be
decimated of the real talent.

Is this a new definition of “nonsense” that is synonymous with
“commercial reality”?
The game has to balance reaching the widest audience with
getting the most revenue. The 6N broadcasting rights are a major
source of revenue for the unions, and therefore for the clubs
and players in their ambit.
At the moment, the streaming services are offering significantly
more than the free to air broadcasters (though a lot less than
they did a few years ago.
Should they turn that down in favour of offering a product to
fans who, as your post acknowledges, won’t pay to watch rugby?
Most soccer has been behind a paywall for decades, and it
doesn’t seem to have harmed it.
Rugby doesn’t just need fans, it needs fans who will pay for it.

It's daft comparing rugby with football. The Premier League was
massively popular before it went to pay TV and I don't recall
much in the way of free to air live league games anyway.
Football didn't need to "grow the game".

I think Premier League football has always been on pay TV

There's an article in the Times (archive link here
HTML https://archive.ph/XhPRZ)
that hints that it's likely to remain
on FTA rather than pay TV. The quotes from the TNT spokesperson
that the importance of the visibility of the games, particularly
in Wales & Ireland making things difficult for them are quite
telling.

Well yes it has but the First Division wasn't. I felt it was too
much of a pain to write Premier League/First Division; perhaps
it wouldn't have been. [emoji1]

The portion of the licence fee that the BBC feels able to
allocate to securing the rights, or the revenue that ITV thinks
it can get from eyeballs on ads are clearly not enough for them
to offer more than the streamers do. The equation cuts both
ways. If rugby doesn't draw the viewing figures, it's not going
to get the big bucks.

I quite enjoyed that period of time when you could stream live
any games not being shown by tnt but on Premiership Rugby.
