Six Nation target free-to-air broadcast deals

The Six Nations fixture list is set for a significant shake-up
as officials prepare to pitch TV rights packages for future
editions of the Championship.
The current broadcasting deals with free-to-air broadcasters
expire at the end of the 2025 tournament and according to
reports, officials are weighing up options to attract ‘strong
bids’ in an attempt to remain available to the masses.
With the rights expiring this year, there is a possibility that
the Six Nations could move to paywalled broadcasters like TNT or
Sky, particularly after the UK government deemed that the
tournament is not a ‘Crown Jewel’ sporting event which requires
it to be shown on free-to-air television.
Traditionally, most Six Nations matches are played in the
afternoon but later kick-off times are being pushed for the
benefit of potential broadcasters
The Six Nations is also set to be shortened by a week from next
year with the removal of one of the rest weeks with the
tournament taking place over six weeks instead of seven. This
would likely result in a block of three games, a break and then
the final two rounds.

attracting younger/lower paid supporters.

I always wonder what the return would be if they made a deal
with Google and made the matches free to air globally via
Youtube and just earned money from adverts, etc.
It would have a massive global reach and it would likely gain
new younger viewers.
Nobody would really have a good reason why they couldn't watch a
match - e.g. I haven't got a Premier Sports account as it is too
expensive.
And - you could easily link it to other content - e.g. player
diaries, post match analysis, etc.

Certain sporting events have to be on FTA - FA Cup final,
Wimbledon, etc.. The 6N I think used to be one but is now
highlights only officially (although BBC and ITV own the rights
so it is FTA)

For me, every England International in any sport should be FTA.
There's more than enough channels to cope and they always seem
to be available when Serbia play Greece at a WC/Euro's in
Football.
Sadly, money will always talk in these matters and that's why
"growing the game" is a laughable reason every time it's chucked
out in a soundbite.
RFU: "We want every England Rugby international to be available
on FTA"
Sky: "Here mate, we'll give you £2mil more"
RFU: "It is very important that the game can reach a global
audience and benefit from the partnerships that will strengthen
the bonds with our game and support grass roots, hence why we're
delighted to announce this deal with Sky"
I know it's the only way unless a very rich benefactor could
take over the game in this country but the RFU would never vote
for that and miss out on 12 free lunches a year. Sadly it'll
only change with franchising when the players will get all the
power, like in football.
