Yeah, but one of our players had already formed a ruck with one
of theirs and he just kinda went past them to get his hands on
the ball

long throw.

I think also that the term you use "slight wobble" is also fair.
I think that this law is for lineouts where the hooker tries to
throw the ball at 90 degrees, but does a Dave Ward, then it is
"play-on" if nobody competes.
If the Hooker throws the ball at 45 degrees directly to the
scrum half, then the ref will blow his whistle even if nobody
competes.
It is just to apply a bit of common sense to speed the game up
by not blowing the whistle when throws go slightly adrift.
This will probably be very important when we start to see "smart
balls" in common use where the ball is sensitive to the exact
direct of the ball throw. We don't want the game to be slowed
down from too many scrums.

When they trialled smart balls in the U20 RWC, one of the
striking things was that it led to a lot of lineouts being
called not straight, but very few passes. I agree that these
changes could well be a reflection of that … but fans will also
have to get used to the idea that even if a pass looks forward
it may not actually meet the definition used in programming the
smart ball tech. (Which I suspect is something like “it can’t go
forward faster than the player was immediately before the pass”)

A line out throw is from a static position. A forward pass is
not.

Deadly, you don't even know what a forward pass is! 😁

And? The physics is the same. The forward component from the
hooker in a lineout is zero, so any movement towards the try
line is (strictly speaking) an offence, though in practice I
suspect there's probably a small tolerance.
The forward component from a player running straight forward
could be 8m/s - and anything less than or equal to that would be
acceptable under the current Law interpretation (much as we saw
in the smart ball trial)

seething over an in the side clean out just outside their 22,
about 30 seconds earlier, so hey.

an extremely good side who are very potent with ball in hand and
we chose to pin them back rather than giving them anything to
work with in the middle third. Our attack was varied, we had a
lot of joy in the outside channels, and it didn't look like we
weren't threatening to score or that we lacked ideas; instead we
were happy to have a look and then put them under pressure with
the kick. It worked a treat.

Just managed to watch the match and I agree with this analysis.
Decent enough win against a good team. A bit disappointing not
to get the 4th try, but looking at the draw, maybe a (slight)
blessing in disguise!
