England: In 2023, there were around 223,000 people playing rugby
union in England, which was a four-year high. In the 2022/23
school year, 8.3% of children aged 5–16 played rugby.

The question is, how many of them are, or could be,
international class players? And how many of that rarefied group
could we afford to lose, either to France or to other sports?

Bear in mind that there have been changes to registration rules.
Every single player, even if they turn up once to play for the
Dog and Duck 3rd XV, has to be registered on GMS before taking
the field - with a risk of severe fines if they are not.
This does mean we have better ideas of the numbers playing, but
it means that the numbers cannot be compared with previous
seasons.

Is that just adult men's players? 50,000 extra kids running out
on a Sunday is great but isn't going to help Borthwick in the 6N

We're taking professional rugby, not the blokes in the pub team
and the uni kids. Especially as many of those get counted
multiple times for funding reasons.
