There’s also a “cowboy movement” among the Red Roses outside
backs. It boils down to an attitude that sometimes in a game you
need to step up and change the momentum, and it’s the source of
their try celebration (throwing an imaginary lasso). Seems to
work for them.
Anyway, good news, and a key player to have retained.

Feels like parallels to be drawn with our 'swing the bat' motive
of last year particularly in Europe. Although towards the end of
the season it seemed to justify some downright recklessness.

Having the Womens world player of the year renew is massive for
the Women after a list of high profile departures over the last
couple of years. Things are certainly looking up in that area of
the club!

I think there has generally been a higher turnover of players
among the PWR clubs than we are used to in the men’s game, for a
couple of reasons:
- The salary cap is very small (less than many men’s marquee
players are paid individually), and only some of the players are
paid enough to play full time. It’s probably easier to entice a
player to move if you have a full time slot to fill in their
position
- Conversely, the semi pro and amateur players may well move for
their non-rugby career
- Young players often leave their “home” club to go to uni, and
sometimes then come back (I think Grace Compton did that this
year)
- There’s an influx of overseas players into PWR ahead of RWC
25.
I think that will stabilise as pathways mature (most of the
clubs now have ties with one or more schools or colleges playing
in the RFU ACE and AOC leagues - Quins’ is Worthing College) and
the salary cap rises enough for fully pro teams. I suspect that
the overseas players will stick around post RWC 25 but that
they’ll shift back as their home leagues mature.
All of which said, the turnover at Quins last year did seem
quite drastic. Most of the big name departures were retirements,
but there was a broader cull and replacement. With hindsight, it
looks like Big Chis was making adjustments to the squad to fit
with his game plan, and it looks increasingly like he did a good
job.
Now we need to hope that he can keep the squad together, but
Kildunne renewing is a big statement and a good sign.
