Not ideal though is it? A very unsettled midfield.
Smith, Andre, Marchant was absolutely the first choice but I'm
not sure we really know the best combination at the moment
anyway.
9 Porter
10 Smith
11 Murley
12 Anyanwu
13 Northmore
14 Isgro
15 Green
Is this our best backline? How many times has that combination
actually featured? Beard gets hard done by here too but I guess
something has to give.

In the 2 games where we had Smith+Lenny+Luke, we had:
Falcons - Porter, Smith, Cleaves, Anyanwu, Northmore, David,
Halfpenny
R92 - Porter, Smith, David , Anyanwu, Northmore, Murley,
Halfpenny
I think that the Murley+Green+Isgro combo has only featured
twice. Chiefs + Bath. In those games, Isgro scored 3 tries and
Murley 1.

Depends, no?
You don't want to be endlessly tackling the opposition by
letting them have the lion's share of possession as it is
exhausting.
But better to tackle than not and shows defence is working
hard...?

Missed tackles would be an interesting stat. But the high number
of tackles could mean that we're defending well enough that the
oppo are attacking but not scoring.

Opta stats put our tackle success at 87.7%.
% of missed tackles leading to breaks - 12.6%
% of missed tackles leading to try - 10.7%
% missed where player was tackled (eg falling off) - 76.8%
Now again, we have to speculate wildly about what is actually
happening on the pitch here -- but looking at the teams at the
top....
% missed where player was tackled
Quins - 76.8%
Bath - 64.2%
Bears - 64.4%
Tigers - 64.9%
Saracens - 66.7%
Now this is the bit that's simply guesswork based on those stats
-- but if you're attempting a tackle to the point where it's
nearly completed that's you taken out of the defensive line
(probably).
So it might be that our failure to complete these tackles more
than others is happening at crucial moments allowing line breaks
etc...but again we just can't tell from this.
It is interesting that we have this gap compared to others when
most of the other stats are roughly similar.
And now i've checked the bottom....
Saints (66.2%) Falcons (69.3%), Chiefs (69.5%)
So we are in fact the most likely in the league to get hold of
someone in a tackle but fail to complete, according to this
stat.

Isn't that a function of how we defend? We tend to go with a
fast defensive line with at least one player - often Marcus -
rushing up to disrupt the passing lanes. That player quite often
makes a partial tackle that the ball carrier breaks, but they
then get stopped on or near the defensive line. The system
doesn't care if the first tackle is missed, as long as it keeps
the ball from getting wide.
