Thought something similar Jammy, however the weekends game was
us doing all the attacking (to little avail) and I hoped the one
thing that would help second half would be that Racing would be
knackered. Unfortunately they appeared to be fitter and
stronger as they game went on and so we ended up defending most
of the second 40. Perhaps a mixture of no plan B and mental
fatigue did for us if defending is more tiring that attacking as
we shouldn’t have been out of puff after that first half.

Still haven't seen it so can't comment specifically, but size
mismatches can also really exhaust you and those French sides
are big across the board

Yes, you are right. You can add Saints away to the list. We
played very well in the first half then shipped a load of points
when Nick David got a yellow early in the second half. We
couldn't quite scrabble it back after that.
Perversely, we were really poor in the two yellow card periods
against Bath at home! (Bath having been given the yellows - for
clarity!)

Interesting - So out of a small statistical pool, we lost 3
games in which we received 2nd half yellow cards.
Also - one of those games included in the statistics is the
Quins v Saracens game in which we only scored one 2nd half try -
but, in no way would I describe us as poor on that day.
In my mind, statistics on their own don't show anything. You
need to analyse the context behind the stats.
But - I guess the answer is pretty simple.
Don't get yellow cards
- then we can have a full 15 in attack - which may help us to
start scoring 2nd half tries again.

Fitness is probably the easiest thing to address currently - but
only if addressed correctly with the right coaching.
I have a feeling Jones might be off this season if Wales come
calling, I can’t see Gatland being in post if they have a poor 6
nations so wouldn’t bet against Bomb being in the mix for a
coaching role

I mean that could be right. But I think the stats show pretty
clearly that we are failing to convert opportunities into points
- which is something people moan about on here quite rightly.
The data would suggest that either our decision making or
execution is failing us - and I agree that you can’t tell which
one just from the numbers.
But a team with one of the best defences (barring the Bristol
game, but even that awful performance is factored into the
overall stats) is currently in the bottom half of the table and
has among the lowest number of tries and points scored.
Now sometimes you could be top of the table with the best
defence and not lead in points scored, that is true.
But we’re not. We’re hanging on because of bonus points like
last year.
I’d love to say I’m watching a great side that are being unlucky
- but that’s not how it looks watching them from the stands and
I think, for me anyway, the stats back up my mainly useless
rugby fan view that our attack (barring mauls on the line) is
pretty ineffective and we regularly leave the 22 leaving points
on the pitch.
No clue where the issue lies, coz as I say I’m just another fan
wanging on about stuff, but I’m far from impressed with us this
season barring the Sarries match (and even then, on another day
they may not have had a total brain failure about how to deal
with our defence like they did).
It frankly a bit like watching England - Marcus throws the ball
around a bit and sometimes it’s amazing but a lot of the time we
overplay or lose the ball and we don’t take the points when we
should.
We’ve had other issues in recent seasons but this is a new one
that’s a bit of a worry.

Perhaps we should abandon the defensive strategy and go back to
relying on scoring more than our opponents. It worked better
than the current game plan.

Maybe we are trying to play like the team that we used to be
rather than the team that we are.
Turning down kickable penalties to go to the corner is a case in
point. We had a period where we used to score quite regularly
from that, but recently we have not and haven't looked like
doing so. Whether that's from changes in the line up (i.e. no
Andre) or something else, I think that it would be better to
keep the scoreboard ticking over and put the pressure on the
opposition. That requires a change in mindset, or a change in
instruction.

In my opinion, the area where we are struggling is in the
midfield at 10-12-13.
So far we have had very little consistency in selection in these
3 key positions. When I have rewatched games a few days after
the win/loss, one thing that seems to happen a lot is that
passes from this area quite often do not go to a person - which
results in no-try or turnover.
In previous seasons, Andre knew where to be and was in the right
place to collect a Marcus pass.
This season, it could be from JEv -> Northmore or from Marcus ->
Lenny, etc and quite often, this changes mid game.
I think that until we work out who our best 12+13 is and work
out a way of somehow getting JEv into the game, then we will
struggle.
I would like to see an experiment with JEv at 12. I know it is a
position that he used to play in and having an extra playmaker
on the field could help.
