Quins - good or not? - here are some stats

Given the heated debate on the weekend's match thread, here's
some stuff I find interesting.
To me, what we're seeing is sadly entirely predictable from the
stats for the team for this season. (Updating this post from
October when we kept losing apparently "close" games. These come
from Prem Rugby and Opta updated before the weekend.)
Defence
Second fewest points conceded (162, only Tigers lower at 146)
Second most tackles (1134, only just behind Glos on 1139) -
Tackle success at 81%
Turnovers - 3rd (54, behind Bath and Falcons joint on 55)
Mauls won 27, mauls lost 1
Lineouts - 93% success rate
Scrums - 87% success rate (not as good as it used to be)
BUT.....
Attack
It starts by looking ok....but tails off quickly.
Clean breaks - 3rd
Passes - 4th
Defenders beaten - 4th
Metres gained - 5th
Carries - 5th
AND crucially...
Tries scored - 7th
Points scored - 8th
Entry into the 22 leading to a try
Bristol 44.5%, Bath 43.4%, Sarries 42%....
Quins 34.3%....(better only than...you guessed it....Saints,
Falcons and Chiefs).
Even more clear in the stats and from watching the games, a
staggering 74% of our tries are in the first half...
All of which, in my humble opinion, is exactly the team we've
been watching this season.
1) A good defence has kept us in a lot of games, but when it
goes to pot (like for the last two weeks) we've not got much
else
2) We throw the ball around and create some chances but are
failing to convert those chances into points.
3) We are notably poor in the second half of matches and can't
score a try
To me this is a team that has a misfiring attack and has kept in
some tight matches through its defence -- so when the defence
fails there's nothing much left.

Good analysis.
I think the main issue is we have good intentions and set our
stall out, but after about 20 minutes in we just completely lose
all shape, and the bench usually makes things worse.
The “comeback kings” vibe has long gone and usually once we go
behind the outcome is inevitable

Interesting stats.
The last few years we have tended to be very good at converting
in the 22, so that's a big swing.
Two factors that I think are relevant and haven't been much
commented on have been:
1) an unsettled back five. We've fielded multiple centre
pairings, and in particular we've been missing Green and Murley
for a lot of games this season.
2) are the coaches prioritising defence and setpiece over
attack? We've got a new defence coach and a new focus on maul
defence, plus new front rows to integrate into the squad. I
wonder if the priority has been on those, and if so whether they
will shift the focus to attack now that those areas are working
well.
And then there's the obvious one of not having Andre - I think
Anyanwu has generally played well, though Northmore still looks
much better at 13, but neither offers quite the ability to
generate front foot ball from slow play that Andre did, and the
team may be struggling to adapt to how they can replace that
impact.

Hi - I'm just reading through this forum out of interest as we
(Glasgow) obviously come down to play you in January.
This observation really stood out for me. This was a massive
problem Glasgow had under Danny Wilson - we were terrible in
second halfs (to be fair we weren't great in first halfs either
- his tenure here resulted in our only foray into the Challenge
Cup in years).
I wonder whether it's coincidence, or what is causing it -
conditioning is an obvious factor, but there's also how you use
players from the bench, how you rotate players through the
season, mental strength etc.

Are there any stats about yellow cards?
In both the Bristol and R92 games, we received yellow cards in
the second half of the game - which seemed to have a big impact
on our performance. Did we get yellow cards in other games? (I
can't remember)
I feel that we coped better with YCs in previous seasons. Maybe
this is an area that the new coaching setup isn't spending so
much time working on (i.e. defending and attacking with 13/14
players)

From memory, we have tended to handle the YC ten minutes quite
well, only to concede once we're back up to a full complement.
Similar to our longstanding issues with reliable exit
strategies, come to think of it.
I wonder if it would be worth comparing what the Women's team
has done this year. They've gone from being very leaky last year
to being top 3 in defence this year and - barring the first
couple of games when the internationals were away at PWR - an
emerging knack for finding a way to win at the death.

If Chisholm starts on the bench and then comes on, that usually
leads to a second half yellow doesn’t it?

Or fitness, or a change in tactical approach if we're leading. I
don't think it's the latter and certainly for some matches this
season it has been the inevitable consequence of a serious
defensive effort in the first half
