Hopefully under labour people jamming up trains with push-bikes
on a rugby day will stop.

Don’t give them ideas! We will have a cycling tax

Think the railways are past saving and getting anywhere near the
level of other developed countries - decades or underinvestment
(in its many guises) make it a shear financial mountain that is
far too high.

Am I right in thinking there's a fines/refunds policy in place
for when trains are late by a certain amount of time (a few
minutes?) so passengers either get their money back or rail
companies are fined, in order to ensure punctuality and
reliability is the main priority?
I'm told that if the train is more than two minutes late,
passengers are given a letter to show their boss, otherwise they
wouldn't believe the excuse for lateness.
Then again, Japanese politicians have resigned for the massive
dishonour of lateness. Meanwhile, the UK has David Lammy.

Mention of the word woke on a thread about trains! Amazing! I
never thought that I would see this in the wild.

In Wales we have publicly owned trains now, it's a work in
progress shall we say, but no better or worse than what we had
before tbh

As I understand it, the reason Japan has an efficient rail
system is largely a matter of geography. As a long, thin country
with most people living in a fairly thin coastal strip, and a
lot of mountainous terrain, it made sense to invest in an
effective rail network and there isn't the space for a competing
network of roads.
The UK is comparatively wide and flat and we allowed
roadbuilding to compete while underinvesting in rail
infrastructure. And the Civil Service lawyers who drafted the
rail privatisation bill regarded it as very apt that it went
into force on 1 April.
well quite. It's like all the dullards who say 'I went
to Spain on holiday, and the train was just fantastic'. Yes,
that's because you went on a train from one end of an enormous
country to the other without stopping, and didn't see a single
building between the two. Not quite the same as trying to put a
railway through the most densely populated large country in the
western world.
