Dunno. I’m still quite proud of this one. The concept came
automatically once people dubbed the match Bristanbul, but it
took some care to invert the way the original runs while
maintaining sense, scansion and rhyme:
To the tune of "Istanbul" by the Four Lads (but popularised by

I’ll be surprised if we bring anyone in.
Wyn Jones and Els will probably be seen as back up, along with
Kerrod.
Lewis is the new PDJ, where is he? He was the biggest downgrade
ever from Louw

Think Kerrod mainly plays tighthead.
There is also Tom Osborne, the guy from Oz too. Has played some
Prem Cup games. No way are we bringing in anyone else. Baxter
with Jones and Els as cover will see us through the season.
Tighthead would be far more concerning if Titi went down
injured. There's a real lack of depth there I think. Hopefully
Hobson comes through next season in the same way Baxter has
done.

The club will have been planning to replace Joe for next season
- he's presumably been on serious wedge (though may have taken a
cut this year in return for reduced minutes).
That budget will now be available a little early. I can't see
them rushing to get someone in but equally they have not been
shy of snapping up a player at short notice if they fit the
squad's needs. Not all of them work out, but it's generally been
more miss than hit on hiring big names from the home nations,
and more hit than miss for overseas players and underappreciated
home players.
Alternatively, I wonder if this gives them any headroom to make
a better offer to Jibulu or Anyanwu?

If you listen to the Eggonomics podcast with Mark Evans he says
that clubs are planning 12-24 months in advance in terms of
contracts and salaries. If you are waiting until now to sort out
next season, it's already too late.
There is no way that Joe's departure won't have been factored in
well in advance to keep promising young players.
A lot of players will have been on post-academy contracts and
then you suddenly need to find another £100k a year to keep
them. It must be a nightmare.
Take the Hobson renewal for eg. No longer an academy player per
se but certainly not tearing up trees either. So lets say he
signs for two years on £70-80k - not unreasonable for a
promising prop and a significant increase on his £30k academy
deal. But if next season he suddenly becomes the new Baxter and
is looking like a future international you only get one more
season out of him at that pay grade before you have to start
finding a lot more money. But you have to do that at the end of
next season. Maybe he only comes good in 2026/7 a year later by
which point you've already allocated funds elsewhere as it
didn't look like he was going anywhere.
And now fans are screaming that he has to be kept. And French
clubs are prowling. England central contracts are being thrown
into the mix.
Honestly, trying to compute the salary cap contracts must be a
gordian knot of complexity. I cannot imagine how difficult the
variables are.

I'm aware of that and that planning is done well in advance -
but equally that nothing is certain and part of the skill of
managing a squad within a cap is to be able to react to
unexpected changes in the plan.
The Academy rules were changed during COVID, by the way, and
players can now remain on an academy contract and be paid up to
£50k outside the main salary cap, so the step up from academy to
senior squad is a lot less than it once was.
Under the current cap rules, the mean salary for a non-marquee
player will be £160,000, but there will be a huge spread within
that. Internationals will probably be on £250-300k for their
peak years, but newly promoted players might, as you say, be on
£60-80k.
Quins will be juggling a number of changes this year that will
have come into the plan quite late. I don't know if they will
have expected CCS to become an England fixture quite so quickly
(though I expect they'll have planned it for Baxter), and I am
not sure whether the emergence of Porter as the successor to
Care will have been a headache or a pleasant surprise - probably
the latter as while his new contract will probably include a
pretty big uplift, the way he has stepped up has saved them
having to entice another top notch 9 away from somewhere else.
Joe's departure at the end of the season will have been planned,
but Quins now have half a season of his salary to play with
within the cap. I was speculating that they might be able to
offer it to a player who they'd like to keep but is wavering so
that effectively they get next season's salary today. It won't
be enough to outweigh a mega offer from France, but if it stops
someone going to another Prem club it could be worth it.

But isn't the point that deals were actually done weeks/months
ago? Whereas Marler's decision feels a little more out of the
blue...
Maybe I'm wrong, but if Anyanwu and Jibulu are indeed leaving,
they're probably not still dotting i's and crossing t's... it's
likely been done for a while.

I think in theory there is a window up until Christmas where
players are only supposed to be negotiating with their current
club and it opens up in January. That may only apply to other
Prem clubs, though - so it is possible that Anyanwu has already
signed but Jibulu - at least in principle - should not have
spoken to another club unless Quins released him.
It's not all done ahead of the season starting - the negotiation
does go on through the season. There are also situations like
the one around 2011 where 5 players were up for renewal and COS
told them that he could afford 4 contracts. From memory Robshaw,
Ugo, Robson and Brown signed, and Strettle left for Saracens

My understanding is that this has now become the beginning of
the final season rather than January.
Edit: dug out the info - any time in the last 12 months is fine
