The BBC pod makes an interesting listen this week as the subject
of number 10s is addressed.
As one would expect, Danny is firmly Team Marcus.
They then discuss some of the other matches and the situation
with Jalibert.
They talk about how brilliant Ramos is because he’s dependable.
Care also seems to suggest that one of the reasons France are
opting for him over Jalibert is that the latter is “a bit more
rogue and a bit more flarey”.

I think this entire debate is on the back of Fin Smith throwing
one (admittedly sublime) miss pass against a tiring Japanese
defence.
For my the series in NZ clearly shored which of the 2 is more
suited to international rugby. The Northampton approach of going
wide at every opportunity isn’t going to work against Tier 1
nations.

Ramos is a great runner and an attacking talent, though.
Jalibert on the other hand might be the more skilled player but
he's frequently bottled it for France. The BBC pod is never
going to say this, of course, but all the ability in the world
won't save you if you mess the bed repeatedly on the
international stage.
Marcus has not had the same experience.

Well yes.
Marcus is better than jailbait and fin is nowhere near as good
as ramos. It's a ridiculous comparison.

I think this is quite nuanced. I suspect Marcus is harder to
learn to play with and when we don’t have a “get out of jail”
crashball 12, I can see the argument.
I think hard to criticise Finn Smith for the losses in NZ - I
dont think it was remotely his fault. We lost the battle up
front in the last 20 mins in each game.
There is a good debate on this in the For the love of Rugby pod
with Youngs in the Finn Smith camp and Watson coming down very
firmly for Marcus.
It would be great if Marcus could add another 5-10 metres to his
out of hand kicking. Would make a massive difference to the
team.

Fin is a more conventional fly half. He's a very good one, which
means he's good at using his team to make yards... But one pass
aside he hasn't shown the creativity to unlock last ditch
defences at international level. He may get it in time, but
Marcus has proven the ability to do it against the top
opposition, pretty much from his first appearances.
That sort of ability is rare and special. It's hugely
frustrating that England haven't picked the players and
implemented the game plan to get the most out of it.
I know I have quartered specs on, but I think it is worth
putting a couple of key players around him who know how to read
his game. Once they are available, I think England would get a
lot more out of a backline like this:
Mitchell/Porter; Smith
Sleightholme; Lawrence; Beard; IFW
Green
Barring Green, you could put that out against Italy or Wales and
see if it works. They are the last two games, so England will
either be in a position where they can roll the dice a bit, or
one where they have to...

It's quite bizarre in this country, in many sports, how pundits
are desperate to hype emerging players, back their cause while
they're not yet established starters, then as soon as they get
settled, the pundits start finding fault and backing the next
pretender.
You have highly rated current and former players from England
and overseas saying how good smith is but then pundits here are
already saying someone else might be the better option, based on
20 mins v Japan.
