Paul Grayson: Marcus Smith must learn Jonny Wilkinson’s ‘less is

Ex Northampton player bugging up current Northampton player.
Where's the story? We all know Marcus tries too hard at
times....

Based on the limited evidence available, Fin actually is better
from 22 to 22; he’s a more conventional fly half and the
backline has a better sense of how to play off him.
But Marcus is more likely to create a try, especially against
top opposition. He can unlock defences in a way that only a
handful of other fly halves can.
So the question is: do you build a conventional attacking side
and rely on tactics and power to score tries? Or do you pick a
backline that can play to Marcus’s strengths - which includes
having a scrum half or inside centre who can call the plays if
he does make a break and get tackled.
In terms of involvements, I’m actually more bothered by the fact
that countless times during the autumn it was Marcus making the
crucial tackles. It’s not that he needs to be hidden in defence,
but that the risk of him getting injured is unnecessarily high
if the fly half is having to make so many tackles..

This!! How many injuries did Johnny pick up from his robust
tackling and Marcus seems to be following his 'England mentor'
on the tackling front. Hopefully the injuries don't follow

It's the classic knee jerk to opinion. Marcus, great player,
rubbish in defence. What happens? Works on his defence and now
makes most of his tackles.
Marcus, great with ball in hand, can't kick tactically. What
happens? Works on his tactical kicking and now moves the team
into the right areas.
Marcus, scores worldies but can't kick from the tee. What
happens? Works with Snapper, Sir Johnny & Ford and now hits over
85% for his country.
What's next? Oh yeah, can't get the rest of the backline
moving...............it'll be he doesn't win enough scrums
against the head next

It's funny how quickly people have forgotten the impact Fin
Smith had in his performances in NZ. He got the backline moving
fluidly then, too, but couldn't find a way to score inside the
22.
How many times has Marcus been taken off at 10 when England have
been leading and seen the game slip away? I've lost count. At
the other end of the scale, he has also won clutch games -
against Ireland last year and against South Africa in 2021 -
when he has been trusted to see them out.

Also, I'm sure he's absolutely not bitter at all about his own
son being eclipsed by Marcus when they were both in the England
U20's in 2017/18 (and since).

As is the idea that he was ever rubbish off the tee. A minor
drop last season and one poor game (immediately followed up by
an excellent one) is the sum total of that.
He's also not trying to tackle like Wilko...
As for Fin in NZ, the backline was not notably better with him
there. His previous efforts off the bench were a net negative,
too. I hope he gets a proper chance to show what he can do at
the top level because at the moment people are drawing some
pretty dodgy conclusions off very little real information.

Quite. I'd go further and say that Fin has so far had a bit of
an armchair ride for saints last season, and been nothing but
unremarkable for England.
