Statement just released by the RFU:
Dear Members,
Yesterday evening, RFU Council Members, including the Council
Elected Directors, met to discuss concerns within the game that
have been raised since the Annual Report and Accounts were
published.
Listening to concerns about a long-term incentive plan (LTIP)
for the executive team, and with Council’s agreement, I have
commissioned an independent review of the scheme. The review
will be undertaken by independent law firm, Freshfields, to
consider the provenance, design, implementation, and
communication of the plan.
Council recognises the reputational damage that has been done to
the sport over the past month and is committed to rebuilding
trust with our members. Council has called for a radical change
in the way that the RFU communicates, setting out clearly all
the work that is being done to address the issues that clubs
have raised about the challenges in the game. Council also
recognises the importance of visible and proactive leadership
and I have met with the Chair and Chief Executive to agree a way
forward.
The role of the RFU Council is to unite the game, support good
governance structures and hold the Board to account on behalf of
its members; the review is demonstrating that in action.
The RFU understands there is concern in the game more broadly.
Our sport has faced challenges in recent years, but I want to
reassure you that while the Union continues to address these,
community game player numbers have stabilised close to pre-covid
levels with improving match completion rates.
There has been an increase in age grade player registrations and
our Community Game Future Project has now planned our first
multiyear community game investment of £30m a year against a
prioritised roadmap with specific plans targeted at growing the
game.
We recognise good Governance is critical and an independently
led Governance & Representation Review is underway and will
report back to the RFU Board and Council in 2025.

Maybe I'm just cynical, but this feels like a very Yes Minister
/ Sir Humphrey move to punt it into the long-grass.
In 6 months time, we'll get a report back, partially redacted,
saying that it wasn't handled brilliantly, but nothing too dodgy
to see here. Meantime the RFU takes the line "We can't comment
as we've commited to an independent review."

That was a holding post by the Board, not the Council.
The Times are now reporting that Ilube has resigned, with
Beaumont coming in as a temporary stop-gap.

After hearing that the CEO of a failing water company gets
£3million and it has debts in the billions , Sweeney seems to be
paid a pittance. How does this happen and how do I get in on it?

It's now being reported that the RFU Chairman has been persuaded
to resign and that Bill Beaumont will replace him on an interim
basis.

For those who think I am joking, please see below a letter
addressed to the HR/Personnel Dept of the RFU. It will catch
today's post. Let's see what happens !
Dear Sir/Madam Re: RFU Management going forward
Following the much publicized discontent and criticism of the
current administration (especially regarding the fiscal,
financial and remuneration issues currently abounding), I would
like to apply for the senior governance role of the RFU.
My offer of service is clear, concise and objectives are stated
below:
Governance – I would appoint a new committee of volunteer’s,
who, like me, would only request modest remuneration. They would
be from a different range of professional disciplines, but have
all one desire in common. That is to promote, encourage,
develop, and improve accessibility at all levels of Rugby in the
country. Also, all will be giving their services for the good
of, and love of the sport.
Main Objectives
- To encourage and promote free movement of clubs at all tier
levels
-- To conduct a thorough review of all financial aspects
relating to the RFU and the sport in general.
-- To review current International selection criteria and make
appropriate changes to enhance selection choices for players,
clubs and country.
-- To encourage and promote more external sponsorship at all
levels of the game.
-- To promote spectator accessibility to games at HQ (revision
of prices, increased “free-to-air” TV coverage of the game at
Premiership, European and English Championship levels
The above are headline (but by no means exhaustive) objectives.
About me;
As you will see from my enclosed CV, I am a highly experienced
Management Accountant, who has worked in a variety of
organisations during my career. I have a “can do” attitude and
also a track record of astute management together with good
interpersonal skills (including motivation and personnel
development).
My Remuneration request. --A salary of £70,000 p.a.,on a
rolling two year contract, free meals whilst on duty and free
HQ car parking. I trust that these requests will be acceptable.

Talk about out of the frying pan....
I've seen nothing about Beaumont to suggest any dynamism or
ability to lead a large organisation. His time at World Rugby is
generally considered to be at best a missed opportunity and at
worst downright unhelpful, especially outside Tier One nations.
I'm not holding my breath.....another stuffed blazer.

Ilube's now officially resigned. From The Guardian:
Tom Ilube has stepped down as the chairman of the Rugby Football
Union as a result of the executive pay and bonus scandal that
has engulfed the game.
Ilube, who took up the role in 2021, admitted in a brief
statement that “recent events have become a distraction from the
game” amid the fury at all levels over the game after it emerged
Bill Sweeney, the chief executive, was paid £1.1m, including a
£358,000 long-term incentive plan bonus while five other
executive directors shared a bonus of close to £1m amid 42
redundancies and the RFU’s record loss to reserves.
Bill Beaumont, who held the role from 2012 to 2016 and in
November stepped down as World Rugby chairman, could take the
role on a temporary basis given he would be considered a safe
pair of hands.
Ilube said: “I have decided to step down from my role as chair
of the RFU as recent events have become a distraction from the
game, but will stay on to ensure a smooth transition to a new
chair as soon as one is in place.”

So - he's not resigned because he actually did anything wrong,
just that he'd become a distraction.
