       Agree, Northmore mustn't be our main 12. Signing a 12 has to be
       a priority. Not too concerned about hooker as long as Walker,
       Riley, and Musk/Head stay.

       This is not massively surprising stat though is it?
       We had a bloke called Andre playing at 12 for the last few
       seasons. (Remember him?)
       Andre was the first choice 12 and if fit, was a guaranteed
       starter - so,  Luke tended to get pushed to 13 or the wing.
       To compound it, Luke had a few injury issues over the last few
       seasons. So, if you look at:
       1. Games where we won over the last few seasons - Then you are
       cutting half the games.
       2. Games where Andre wasn't fit - You are now getting down to a
       small pool of games
       3. Games where Taps wasn't available - Reduces games
       4. Games where Jones wasn't available - Reduces games further
       3. Games where Luke was at full fitness. You are now down to a
       small pool of games
       From memory he has done well when coming on from the bench -
       e.g. in games where Andre took a knock.
       Out of interest - how many times has he started at 12?

       I think the recruitment outcomes over the close season show we
       have a few significant financial issues.  No real surprise that
       we can’t keep the squad we have as it’s one of the biggest.
       Also no real surprise that players are looking to leave if they
       can get loads more money elsewhere.  We follow a minority sport
       that has lived beyond its means for too long.  Suspect whoever
       has the most productive academy will do best over the coming
       seasons - and we are decent in that sense - but all prem clubs
       are in danger of simply becoming a stepping stone to a big move
       abroad regardless of international ambitions.

       This looks like the salary cap working as intended - even if it
       sucks that we're losing players we would like to keep.
       If we're a stepping stone for players moving to France then so
       be it. It's up to our league to fix its own financial issues.

       Bit of over reaction re leavers imo. Much is still only rumours
       and if they do turn out true, id wait until we know who the
       replacements are before panicking. We spend up to the cap, we
       know that. I dont think you can say there is any evidence that
       we have financial issues or that something is going on behind
       the scenes.  Its a short career, players will take all the money
       they can get and good luck to them. Who wouldnt switch jobs to
       double/treble their money, no matter how settled or content you
       are currently.

       This is to be expected. A few factors:
       1. Wasps, Irish and Worcester players plus former Welsh regions
       players were snapped up on the cheap and will be looking for
       significantly improved contract terms
       2. Central RFU contracts will have put some players noses out of
       joint. England selection is becoming increasingly a closed shop
       with premiership form ignored. It's harder to get dropped from
       the squad then it is to get selected....
       3. Reduced number of league games will likely result in smaller
       squads. When you have a good youth system, it's going to be
       impossible to keep them all
       4. The lure of a big payday in France
       All the above makes retention and recruitment a tricky balancing
       act.
       Our recruitment has been (on the whole) very good over the last
       few seasons. So I'm not panicking.

       Agree.   Not panicking either.  We’ve been a mid-table team for
       most of our existence and so I wonder whether the reliance on
       youth development will actually work in our favour in time.

       To play devil's advocate (because why else am I here?) the
       development of academy talent has been ... patchy. My aim isn't
       to be provocative but rather to give another perspective.
       I've been looking through an all-academy 23 and I reckon there
       are some very obvious gaps:
       3 - I think the only actual 3 who is an academy product is still
       in the academy (hence playing Marler out of position)
       Second row subs - 3 of the 5 front-line second rows are imports
       Scrum half - Friday looks like he'll alleviate that but a team
       would still need another
       15 - I went with Anderson who is 4th (?) choice
       There's also very few of the current Quins players who've made
       it from the academy to international honours. Baxter, Marler,
       Lamb & Smith are (I think) the only ones.
       Ultimately, of the 23 I went with, 9 would be current academy
       players with varying levels of Prem experience. Happy to be
       corrected but my 23 was:

       5.

       8.
       9.
       10.
       11.
       12.
       13.
       14.
       15.
       16.
       17.
       18.
       19.
       20.
       21.
       22.
       23.
       Naturally, I'll compare with Sale who I reckon would struggle at
       second row (Rouban Birch is an 8 who started at second row) and
       back 3 (can I play Raffi there and bring in Nye Thomas as the
       spare 9?). Nevertheless, we'd still have only 3 current academy
       players and 9 internationals (7 recent).

       I originally put Northmore in, tbh but only because I forgot he
       was another Cardiff Met product.
       I’ve tried to be pretty strict so haven’t included the likes of
       Bamber for us who was stacking shelves when we brought him back
       to rugby. He was 21 at the time so I think still academy.
