I thought the scheduling was such that we're not expected to
play Prem games during International windows? Either way, the
degree of control the RFU has over England players means that
there will be times when CCS isn't available but Dino is -
training camps, internationals outside the window - and then
there's injury cover (though Dino's injury record is worse than
CCS's right now)

Don't forget Trenholm can easily play everywhere across the back
row - as can Lucas Schmid, who got a start at 8 last week and is
on the bench tonight. If WEv does go, I would be surprised to
see him replaced from outside the club.
Second row will be a key area to focus on in terms of
recruitment if Lewies and Launchbury go, as seems to be a fair
assumption. Lamb is absolute class when both available and fit
(which has been a real issue of late), Herbst has been a quality
addition at what I assume was a decent price and Hammond is...
fine. There must be a 6ft 9in, 120kg EQP Saffer kicking around
somewhere that we can haul in to really allow us to feel
comfortable in this department. Actually, make that two.
I'd like to see Hobson given a few Prem games this season to see
if he can step into Collier's boots - he looks of that mould.
Titi is not cutting it yet (although happy to see if he improves
through this season with Bomb's coaching) and, personally, I'd
be all for Dillon Lewis leaving - he's been largely useless. If
he does leave, just find a solid scrummager to replace him, we
don't need our 3 to do anything else. I know it's the other side
of the scrum but just look at what Nicky Smith has done for
Tigers' front row this season - they look a different side at
set piece. On that note I'd absolutely expect Marler to be
replaced - will be interesting to see what profile of player we
can get, as we'll need them to be starter quality but whenever
Fin is not with England they'll be warming the bench. Always a
tricky sell when recruiting.
I'm still hopeful the Jibulu rumours are just agent talk and
we'll tie him down. I think we'll see Head and Musk both leave -
they haven't featured in a meaningful way for ages. I feel like
we can find the money to keep Walker, Jibs, Riley if we let Head
and Musk go.
Hypothetically, I actually could see Raffi joining at 9 - I
think the style of rugby would be attractive enough for him to
have a crack at sparring with Porter for a couple of years.
Surely Gjaltema will want to leave and actually play some first
team rugby somewhere without going out on loan for most of the
season, so I quite like the idea of adding Quirke and easing
Friday into the mix more gradually.
If Lennox goes I don't love that our depth at 12 would
essentially be just Bradley and Northmore - so Lenny would need
replacing. Good luck to the scouts finding a barrelling 12 now
though, most have been snapped up - Sarries alone have two of
them. Maybe there's something in the Lawrence rumours but I just
can't see it happening. And yes, for what it's worth, I do think
we need a 12 who can carry a couple of players on his back over
the gainline.
The final question for me is whether Jarrod will stay. If he
doesn't, I can see Benson being our bench FH and stepping in
when Marcus is away - so then we probably need a seasoned,
reliable squad playmaker to complement - ideally a utility
player like a Losowski.
Easy.

I think Slevin could be that utility player.
Basically a full back who can place kick very well.
Slotted in at 10 in the under 20 cup.
And, I seem to remember him playing on the wing.

Tbh it's early in his career, but I've never really liked
watching him at 10, he's always looked out of place there to me

To be fair to him, he had not played 10 until he was asked to
step in at the JRWC and did a pretty good job. He will never be
a frontline 10, but he’s a very handy backup in a pinch.

As a wild card, if we're looking for a back row... Evan Roos has
fallen down the pecking order in SA and is a hell of a player.
Maybe we could tempt him as I doubt he'd be expensive.

That'd be a great signing Quinky, but I can't see it. I think we
need a 12 and a hirsute lock or 2 more than we do a back row
too.

That's not the point, though, is it? You don't need every player
to be at near international level, because you can't afford that
(within the cap, at least). But you do need reliable squad
players to cover for injury. We have had seasons where we've
needed all four squad hookers and even had to bring back Aston
Croall to cover injuries.
A balanced squad has a mix of players who will draw the crowds,
players who are in contention for international selection and
players who will never bother the selectors but can do a job
when needed.
