Definitely need new loose head
Jibs is big loss but Walker, Riley & Head should mean no
signings
12 - seems like Kata might be signed to provide cover. Northmore
to play more at 12 with Bradley getting game time
Back row has lots of cover so don’t see signings especially with
sting young players not currently getting game time like
Trenholm
Next issue will be if Tyrone, when qualified doesn’t get England
call as Top 14 love him.
Quins choice seems to be whether to bring through academy
players, there’s quite a few now who are ‘old’ for academy
status (Hyde etc) or bring in replacements.
Ito could want a lot more money when he next has contract talks
Interesting analysis that Exeter are currently miles under the
cap as they know next round go contracts their current squad
will cost a lot more and they don’t want to lose them. Quins
currently have one of the larger playing groups so might be
thinking about that as young players get their 2nd pro contact

I've heard the same thing about Exeter and it is an interesting
conundrum.
Fans demand success (rightly) so clubs have to look at the short
term. Saying "we have a three year plan" won't cut it for most.
So clubs pack their squads up to the salary cap with overseas
players or tried and tested experienced players.
Now Quins are lucky that we have a v good academy that produces
a lot of talent but if a player, perhaps unexpectedly, has a
breakthrough season (look at Smith when the The Cat got injured)
then it becomes increasingly necessary to recalculate and
improve their academy contracts.
These are guys currently earning £30-40k who can suddenly
command 3 or 4 times that and nearly all clubs are spending up
to the cap for the aforementioned instant success.
While it is always disappointing to lose promising players, I
have great sympathy for the recruitment and finance teams at
Quins (And other clubs) constantly juggling limited resources,
player potential and league and european ambitions.

It was also reported that Joe Launchbury and Stephan Lewies may
be off at the end of the season.
I think that Halfpenny and Wyn Jones are injury cover - so,
don't come out of the salary cap in the same way as normal
contracts. So, I would be expecting them to be off anyway.
But Care, Marler, Lewies and Launchbury retiring and Lenny, Jibs
and WEv leaving doesn't feel like a huge shake-up.
I am not sure that Jibs leaving is a "done deal" though. Musk +
Head are also likely up for renewal. So, this gives Quins some
wriggle room in deciding what to do .
Clearly, if Sale have decided that this is a weakness in their
future squad line-up and are willing to splash-the-cash, then
there is little that we can do.
But, I assume that Jibs is on a small academy contract at the
moment and were Quins to offer him a senior contract, then it
would be worth a lot more.
So, it may just be agents trying to get him a good deal.
I also think that it is a risk in offering a player his first
senior contract.
Quite often players are awesome in their breakout year.
But, the rigours of playing in the senior squad often result in
an injury. Sometimes moderately serious.
Then - when they go through rehab and return to play, they are a
much different player. Obviously, more mature, but, also a lot
less reckless and this can mean that they don't have the same
impact that they had before.
In other words - Jibs looks an awesome player - but, I do think
that as a young academy player and needs managing carefully so
that he can have a long, successful career. Quins are probably
in a better position to understand that than other squads are
and may be his better option (obviously disregarding money).

Pretty clear that the backrow is overstocked this year so, while
Evans isnt the one I would have wanted to go, i dont think that
we need to replace him. Same at hooker where 4 of the current
lot is enough. Again, Jibulu is probably the one i would most
want to keep, but he wouldn't need replacing.
Similar situation at lock where Hammond is too good to be 5th
choice, so if only one of Launchberry and Lewies leave then we
are probably good as we are. However, if both go then we will
need to get someone else in.
That means that we are probably looking for:
second choice loosehead
second choice scrum half
first choice inside centre
maybe a squad second row.
Never know if a few more significant players might be off as
well, but that looks manageable.
Tighthead is more of a general issue, but I doubt there is
anything that can be done about that for now.

The other question is whether they are looking to promote from
within. It's early to tell whether Lucas Friday is ready - but
next season he will be the same age that Danny was when he
joined us, and Clare and Murray are a couple of years older.
In terms of centres, Hyde and Bradley look to be closer to
readiness and it may be that Quins think they will be ready next
season and have a higher ceiling than Anyanwu. If we look at
young players we've lost post-breakthrough in recent years, it
has usually been the case that there is a replacement in the
wings.
In the back row, I thought I'd look at Kenningham's stats so far
this season in comparison to Evans, and I was surprised that he
is ahead not just of Will on most stats but also not far behind
CCS on post-contact metres when you adjust for minutes played.
He's also top of the Prem turnover table and second (by one
tackle) in tackling. If he stays fit, this may be the season he
overtakes WEv as the starting 7 (especially given CCS will
likely start at 6 most of the time), which perhaps makes more
sense of Will moving on.

Chisholm and Lawday hope age dosent catch up with them or get
injured, certainly for this period of the season.
Maybe when CCS is away, we will see more of a role of Lamb at 6
though.
Second row is a big one, Lewies, Joe and Irne are all aging, so
this will need investment.
Tight head, again what we haven’t isn’t good enough.
Loose head? Els has done ok, maybe worth seeing if Wyn Jones can
earn a longer stay.
I have a feeling we will get Raffi when DC goes.
Hooker we probably don’t need to being anyone in, if we lose the
best young forward talent of the season so far.
Back 3 probably needs a few faces if Green and Halfpenny go. So
I disagree there isn’t a big overall as I think we would have to
see more new faces to fill the gaps that are needed than we’ve
seen in years

Chis has been a standout this season. Hopefully he'll stay
injury free. The point about Lamb is interesting - won't he be
away a lot of the same times as CCS?
Second row - I think (hope) we'll have a few more years of Irne.
At least enough to see the likes of Browne coming through.
Els may well develop into a quality player. He has the raw
talent but just hasn't had much opportunity.
Friday is being widely touted (on here) as the next big thing at
9. If he grows into half the player that DC became, he'll be...
very short :)
Why would Green go? Of all those mentioned, I'd say we should
cling to him at all costs.

To be fair, while he seems (and looks) older because he has been
around for ages, Chisholm is still only 29. Lawday is only 30 as
well, so i would hope that age won't be a huge factor with those
two just yet.

Chis is nearly 30 and Lawday is about to turn 31 - given their
attritional playing styles, I hope Quins are planning for their
potential retirements in the next couple of seasons.
I share your expectations around Lamb, though. Lock sized
flankers and hybrid flockers seem to be the way forward. I can't
see us going after Quirke, though, given Porter is an excellent
fit to our playing style. Can't see how we could accommodate two
senior SHs who would both want to be starting.

I don't think that we can expect Lamb to fill in when CCS is
away as he will probably be away with Italy at the same time.
