fact I like the tradition, but it is massively protected and
every single response (other than stand there politely watching)
       seems to offend.

so the ancient tradition of challenging your opponents/enemies
is to do this amazing ritual complete with throat cutting motion
and your enemy/opposition just stood there more than 10 yards
back didn't say anything, shout anything, gesture anything
because they weren't allowed to upset the challenger? Is that
how history records it? You issue a challenge then expect a
response and stop pussy footing around what the response is
allowed to be, as long as it isn't totally out of order let them
respond how they like. I seem to remember NZ getting upset when
the response was pick grass and throw into the wind a few years
back, they wont be happy with anything any way.

They didn't get upset by the grass thing and they changed their
haka to make it more obviously not a throat slitting gesture

I just find it odd that you have one of the best rugby teams in
the world touring the Northern Hemisphere who usually play an
exciting brand of rugby and always give it their all on the
rugby field and all that anyone wants to talk about is pre-match
       entertainment.
Google "All Blacks" and you often find that the only pictures
that come up or the news articles are of the Haka and/or the
challenge and not about the rugby.
I don't get it personally. Surely, you would want to be
remembered for playing rugby rather than the pre-match
       entertainment that you provided.

One newspaper article (can't remember where it was) said that
part of the reason that World Rugby enforce the gap between the
teams at Cultural Challenges is so that TV/Press can get their
       "money shot":

It sells well in rights payments & looks good on TV like that,
so they don't want the poor photographers to get trampled on by
a 20st Prop walking over them as they advance to face the
       challenge!

I heard that last week as well. Which is triply daft if that is
what prevents any confrontation. In the days of drones, spider
cams and long range lenses, I'd imagine there are ways to get
that shot without a photographer lying on the floor.
Plus, it means photographers get the same shot at every game.
I'm guessing from the advertising hoardings and shirts that the
photo you've used is from the last world cup but I've no idea
which game. Compare with the England V, Ireland 8 or French
advance as well as all the more confrontational responses.
They're all linked to one particular game and add to the story
       of that game.

It's their tradition no ours. So to me, we should be able to
       respond any way we choose!

We behave like gentlemen and then do our level best to beat
       them.
       Motivation works both ways.
