Allow a response. Stop all the piety surrounding it. Rugby does
sanctimony far too well at times.

I’m not sure this is the case. I’ve been to rugby internationals
since the 1960s and anthems were always played irrespective of
the opposition. At that time there only be one or two
internationals in the autumn so the ABs (and others) only came
north every 4 or 5 years and the 5 nations in the winter. I’m
not old enough to go further back but I would suspect anthems
were played from the early days of international rugby, just
like in football, where there’s no Hakka, and other sports.
There have been changes over the years. Until 1990 in Scotland
the National Anthem, God Save the Queen, was played as
Scotland’s anthem.

It goes much further back to more than 100 years.
Basically, in the beginning, there were no anthems. (In fact,
did many countries, they didn't even have official anthems).
When an All Black team once visited Wales, the crowd sung a song
after the Haka. This started the tradition of anthems being sung
at sporting events.
Basically, the Haka should be before the anthems. I think that
they did this when visiting Wales a few years ago to honour the
original event.

The version I remember is that Wales decided to play the anthems
after the haka. The ABs, in their standard mature way, threw a
mighty strop and did the haka in the changing room and then came
out for the anthems.

I knew as soon as I heard this on the radio that the media would
manipulate what Joe said into something that was nothing like
what he actually said . I agree with him. Why can they do the
Hakka while the opposition is told to stand and watch. There’s
nothing that will get a crowd going more than watching the
spectacle of Mark Reagan slowly advancing towards the Hakkaing
All Blacks until he was nose to nose with them. If you’re not
allowed to do that you could just go and have a kick around
behind the posts. Not allowed to do that either. Why bother to
come out onto the pitch until they’ve done the threatening
dance. It means nothing and has become sterile and almost
pointless without a response. In my opinion.

The Irish have three if they are playing at home and the
president is there.

All bluster and nonsense. I'm all for traditions and it's a
challenge but you should be able to meet the challenge your own
way and if that's by warming up or doing a retaliatory Morris
Dance then that should be fine. This stupid rule that you have
to just stand there and take it is ridiculous.

Apparently you don't have to just stand there. You can do
whatever you like, you just can't approach to within 10 metres.
Personally I think we should form up into 3 rows and then
commence volley for by rank. I think that was the standard way
to deal with hostile natives 😉

In the recent past, the Aussies continued their warm up and
ignored the Haka completely and were accused of being
disrespectful. I don't have an issue with the haka, in actual
fact I like the tradition, but it is massively protected and
every single response (other than stand there politely watching)
seems to offend.
