I think what worries me more is that what is Borthwick seeing in
Henry Slade that is so pivotal to having him start against the
ABs? He'll probably make me look silly on Sunday but I can't
recall his big, bone crunching hits that stop an attack dead or
twinkling feet that sell a defence the wrong way. If Furbank is
in the side as the second playmaker and kicker then why is Slade
       so pivotal?
He is a very fine player but not as critical to England as an
       Itoje or a Marcus...

13 is the widest defensive channel, and the hardest to defend.
It's also usually the position occupied by the backline
defensive captain - which sometimes conflicts with it also often
       being a second creative axis.
I'm not as big a fan of Slade as a lot of pundits (I much
preferred seeing Nacho there and would like to see him back
there for RWC2027), but clearly the coaching staff see his
organisational skills in defence as critical, and like his
       distribution in attack.
It does rankle that he's allowed to play against Quins when none
of Quins injury returnees in the squad aren't, though. I
understand the rationale, but it seems to be one of those things
where the dispensation always works to our disadvantage.

All the discourse around Slade playing this weekend has largely
been along the lines of “but he’s essential to England’s
midfield and needs minutes” as the reason he needs to play.
Have to say though, he didn’t seem that essential when he was
left out of the WC squad…

...and if Marchant wasn't in France, he might still be surplus
       to requirements.

He's been given a central contract, which is pretty mental

I think Ben Youngs, the person, is great. Seems a lovely bloke,
great with fans etc. and an amazing club servant. But it blows
my mind that he has more than 30-40 caps!

Well, I think we all saw how vital Slade is today, the ABs must
       be terrified.
