That's quite a pair of quartered specs.
Slade hasn't played since mid-July and is pencilled in to start
next v NZ given his perceived importance to the team. None of
those points apply to Marler or Northmore both of whom played
last weekend and are unlikely to start (or possibly even play) v
       NZ.

Why is a player who hasn’t played since July pencilled in to
       play NZ?
Either he hasn’t played enough and needs club minutes, or he’s
ready to play for England and should be in camp with the other
       England players.
I don’t like special dispensation for one player and would say
the same if it was someone else playing Chiefs.
But it does remind me of the time Itoje, Farrell, and B Vunipola
were allowed to play for Saracens a week early and Smith’s
request to play that game was denied…

I feel I said this but because of his importance to the team and
       how they play.
Whether we agree or not that he should be playing, Borthwick and
his coaches clearly view Slade as a major cog in the machine.
Their belief is also that the team is best served by Slade
missing one training session (today is a rest day apparently) to
return to England and play for Exeter.
The release for this week is for England to do what they think
is best for the England team; whether that’s to have a night at
a Barcelona game or play in a club match.

I guess that our difference in opinion comes from me looking at
it from a club perspective and you an England one, which is
       fine.
But one club getting an international player back and none of
the others being afforded that luxury is a little unfair imo

"That's quite a pair of quartered specs."
Not really - just a fair assessment of players getting adequate
club game time before being considered for their national team
       😐

The problem is not that Borthwick is doing what he thinks is
best for England - after all that is his job - but that despite
the 18 game season, we are still playing league matches in the
       international window.

Agreed with the bit in bold
Although I would add that the agreement between PRL and England
would seem to give the latter priority during the England camps.
       Hence the England perspective.
I’m also sure that if England felt that Marler, Northmore or any
other player needed game time, they’d also be sent back to their
       club for this weekend.

Given that Marler has only played 40 minutes of rugby since
July, I'm not sure he's in that dissimilar a position to Slade.
Okay, he might not be slated to make the 23 if Borthwick is
favouring Genge/Baxter, but if one of those gets injured he'd be
next in line. Also wouldn't be an unreasonable request from the
club given that the squad takes out our 1st and 2nd choice LHs
(and would feel the same for any other club in that position).
