Actually, that's a fair enough question. I think last year the
squad was stronger, notably with the three players mentioned. It
performed well in Europe, getting to the semi-final and only
losing to Toulouse in a cracking match, which is no disgrace.
The team grossly underperformed in the league, in my opinion, to
finish 6th.

Isn't the key transition from not having a defence coach in the
second half of the season to having Jason Gilmore?

Which as ever will lead me to ask which team in the Top 5
shouldn't have been there? It's all very well saying that 6th
was an underperformance but any one of 9 teams started the
season expecting to be at least top 6.
I'd argue at least all of the top 6 expected to be top 4.
Possibly Leicester as well.

Yep.
Quins finished in 6th with a points difference of -34
Exeter finished in 7th with +75
Leicester finished 8th with +28
6th was a good result, not a bad one.

We ran out of steam for the last 2 matches (basically after the
European knock-out rounds). I don't think that we have the squad
depth to try to win both cups.
We expected to win the last game of the season - which was a
home game (against Bears if I remember correctly) - which would
have put us in contention for the top 4. But, we were well
beaten on the day.
So - I would say that if we had not taken Europe seriously, then
we would certainly have been top 5.

Points difference is (for me) largely moot given that both
league points and wins are more important deciding factors. I
can't remember when a league position was las impacted by points
difference.

I think that it is hard to predict where we will finish this
season.
I keep a points tracker where I compare this season's results so
far against last season's results. We are currently tracking in
sixth place.
So - that sounds simple.
But, in reality it isn't.
Quins were one of the top 4 teams in Europe last season.
However, competing in that league means that you have to
compromise.
In this season, we may lose one of our first games in the
European league and then choose to concentrate on the
Premiership instead. In this case, I would be disappointed if we
were still targeting 6th position in the Premiership.
However, I would rather win the European cup than win the
Premiership (been there, done that, its getting boring now :-)
). So, lets focus on making the European finals this year.
