I thought David was pretty unlucky.
It was definitely a penalty try and yellow card though.

It’s definitely a yellow and PT, so I don’t see how he’s
unlucky. Goes from a 5 point try and tough conversion and us
still at 15 men, to a 7 point try and losing a man - just the
worst outcome.
David’s had a really disappointing start to the season
unfortunately, which is a shame as he played well in pre-season.

I thought he was unlucky as he had to try to do the tackle.
But, the player was so low that there was always a chance of it
going wrong.

I don’t agree it was the yellow card that did for us. We had
multiple chances in the first half and should have had a much
bigger lead. We also exited poorly and let them back in it
after our first two tries. Didn’t take advantage when we had
the momentum and it killed us later against a Saints side that
won’t play as badly as they did first half again. We saw last
season the impact of fine margins of a smaller division and we
haven’t learned from that. Two ‘nearly’ away games already
could prove costly later.

I don't understand why we took the 3 points in the 1st half when
we were pretty dominant.
It wasn't as though we were huffing and puffing a lot and not
getting anywhere.
I think that if we had gone for the corner, there was a fair
chance that we would have scored the 4th try to get the BP.

David’s form is a concern considering he’s been a mainstay for a
few seasons in the back line. I think with Murley coming back
hopefully soon, and Isgro, we at least have options. I think we
are avoiding him at FB as I think he’s fairly poor under the
high ball. I wouldn’t be against benching him if Halfpenny is
fit, and then giving our argie a go. He obviously has something
about him to get into a good Argentina squad against the worlds
best sides.

Of course he was unlucky. He was yellowed as a result of the
intervention being foul play, but he managed to knock the ball
out which was what he was going for. Sleightholme was at his
knees in the act of diving for the line. It was always going to
be yellow, but David didn't actually do anything wrong. It was
very nearly a brilliant try saver.

Well, if we're going to pick turning points there was always
Marcus' run behind the posts that ended in tragedy. Also, my son
remarked we seemed to have gone backwards to that time when we
could score a try and then immediately hand the opposition one
on a platter. We must have known how good Sleightholme is,
someone should have been standing a little bit closer to him.
What I noticed was our lack of penetration compared to the
Saints. We didn't seem to be able to find gaps (possibly because
their defence was better drilled) but we'd go side to side
battering away then drop the ball or get isolated or whatever
and then it was back to our defence. We managed to bring people
down OK, but not until they'd made a few hard yards and they'd
then recycle and repeat.
It wasn't all bad, and we had a couple of tries held up that
would have altered the result. All in all, the better team won ,
but we could have been the better team if we'd played with a bit
more TCUP and cut out the incidents where we lost possession.
As for the match day experience, the real ale bar was fine beer
£6.20 a pint, the hog roast sold a bun filled with pork,
stuffing and apple sauce for £7:80. So very comparable. The
seats felt like something Ryan Air would reject on the basis of
not enough legroom. This is seriously going to affect my seat
selection in future. Took 45 minutes to get out of the car park
(£8.50) (the same as last time I went to Saints by car). Could
have done without the Saints fan in front of me who celebrated
every Quins penalty/knock on/possession loss as if he were Ben
Earl. But otherwise they're a good bunch of fans, shook hands at
the end and had a very good discussion with some random stranger
as we queued to get out the stadium.

This is where the penalty try = yellow card can be harsh,
anywhere else it would be penalty, play on - maybe a word of
caution. Should there be some leeway available to referees in
this sort of case where the offence is not a cynical attempt to
stop a try? As RR says Sleightholme was diving for the line
which with normal play would be good mitigation.

Yup. We bossed Saints in the first half but gave them a big
helping hand in scoring 14 points by not managing re-starts and
giving them easy access to our 22. We really should've been out
of sight by the end of the first half.
