I wish I could agree with you here - but all that was proven was
that it doesn't work. Maybe he'll just about scrape by at Prem
level, but if I was his namesake on the other team, I'd be
raining high balls down for 80 mins. I'm already bracing myself
- Marcus is many things, but will never be a high ball
specialist.

A well taken high ball, sidestepping the on rushing opponent in
broken field play is right up Smudgers Strasse.

Not thrilled by Marcus at 15, he has weaknesses there because
he's not a fullback and I don't remember it ever working for
Quins. Saints have the most complex attacking patterns in the
league and we are likely to struggle.
Would much rather we kept David at 15 and Marcus at 10. We have
other wing options.

I have no issue with Smith at 15 - one of the best broken field
runners in the world, and having that 2nd playmaker and kicking
threat against Saints will be a positive. Better to have our
best players on the field and play to our strengths rather than
picking a squad to negate Saints’ strengths, and I’d prefer
Marcus and Jev to Marcus and Anderson for that

It's curious that Wyn Jones, Lewis and Launchbury aren't in the
squad but aren't listed as injured either. Joe came off a bit
early last week but seemed okay? Lack of general match fitness
or just squad rotation?

There's often a difference between "fit enough to play if
necessary" and "fully fit". I can remember John Kingston
describing an end to the season where all the locks and hookers
were carrying injuries and every week was a struggle to get
enough of them to 90% that they could put a team out.
It wouldn't surprise me to learn that they are able to play but
carrying something minor that makes it better to rest them.
I also haven't yet done the roadmap for this year (sorry!) but
Saints away as the third game in 12 days looks like one where
the coaching team will be have pencilled in 2 points rather than
5.

I guess I prefer having our best fly half and a very good
fullback (David) rather than our reserve fly half and a part
time fullback.

Whichever way you cut it, the injury situation means you are
going to have either players out of position or much less
experienced players on the pitch. to put David at fullback, you
have to put a player on the wing who hasn't played much senior
rugby or hasn't played much at wing.
My daughter played in an RFU ACE league match yesterday where
the teams were fairly evenly matched but the opposition wingers
were inexperienced compared to her side's. They won by a lot
(and she, a prop, was deeply annoyed that it was "a winger's
game").
Given Saints have an all-England back three at the moment, it's
a big risk putting inexperienced wings up against them.
