"Marcus Smith agrees new long-term Harlequins deal"

The Telegraph has just reported that Marcus has signed a new
deal:
Marcus Smith agrees new long-term Harlequins deal despite
Bristol Bears interest
Exclusive: Quins have managed to ward off interest from Bristol
and French clubs to keep the 25-year-old England fly-half.
Harlequins have agreed a new long-term deal with Marcus Smith
that will see the England fly-half remain at the Stoop until
2028.
Telegraph Sport understands that Bristol Bears were among
several clubs interested in recruiting Smith, however Harlequins
have moved to restructure Smith’s contract to keep him at the
club past the 2027 World Cup in a boost to England head coach
Steve Borthwick
Last year, Smith held advanced talks with Racing 92 about a move
to the Top 14, where he retains suitors but would render him
ineligible for international selection. The 25-year-old was
England’s starting fly-half on the summer tour to Japan and New
Zealand and will have an opportunity to retain the No 10 shirt
for the autumn campaign that George Ford is likely to miss with
a torn quad.
The departure of South African centre Andre Esterhuizen to the
Sharks in the summer enabled Harlequins to allocate resources to
keep Smith at his boyhood club.

Good to know, but no surprises.
There are very few teams in the world that would not be
interested in recruiting Marcus. But Quins have built their
current side and style of play around him, and it would be more
costly to replace him than to pay what it takes to keep him.
I also suspect that it is not in Marcus’s interest to move right
now. He’s in a strong position to lead England into RWC 27, and
even a move to another English club would potentially disrupt
that. The time to follow the money is when he’s no longer in
contention for that white 10 shirt.

I do hope this isn't a misguided "April Fool's" posting !
There is nothing yet on the Quins Website (you'd have thought
there would be !).

Until confirmed by Quins/MS its all speculation, not that we
have ever been there before on any subject....
