They discussed this on the Monday night cricket show on BBC Five
live last night. All sport (big money has gone into Baseball,
Golf, Cricket, Football, F1, Moto GP so far this year) seems to
be of intrest to the super rich and wealth funds, which
personally I'm rather suspicious about.
But you can't compare the sports as each one has it's own unique
problems. Rugby, American Football and Rugby League have the
problem of head injuries and nobody (with huge money) wants to
be holding the baby when it [emoji90] itself.
I see football being next to have a problem as players start to
realize they are playing to much football. But then they will
probably pay them more money to shut up.

All that rolling around on floor, acting like they've been shot,
worrying their Alice bands aren't straight... it takes its

Cricket also has India with over a billion people for whom it is
the be all and end all as far as sport is concerned. Rugby
doesn’t have an equivalent in the same way.

You’re giving me flashbacks.
I got sent to work in India in 2009 and emailed ahead to my
hotel to find out where in Mumbai I could watch rugby. The
answer came back after two weeks: nowhere in India. (In China,
by comparison, we just walked down to the embassy district in
Beijing where there was an almost perfect recreation of a
British pub, replete with Sky and tobacco-stained flock
wallpaper).
When I arrived, I discovered why: India had 11 sports channels.
At any point, from my random sampling, 6 were showing live
cricket. 3 were showing vintage cricket. The remaining one was
showing Man United.

The TV and sponsorship rights seem to be a big part in making
the books balance. Top 14 have bigger stadiums too. Bristol
pulled in 18,000 for their last game which can only help. I hate
seeing rugby being played at half empty football stadiums but
it's got to make more financial sense than a dedicated rugby
venue used 20-ish times a year. Could every Quins game be a 'Big
Game' and try and get more Londoners attending?

Mark Evans (Quins' former CEO) used to say that the key to
profitability as a rugby club was to own your own 15,000 seat+
stadium and sell it out regularly.
Using a big football stadium tends not to work so well because
most clubs don't own the stadium and so don't get most of the
revenue on matchdays. It's notable that Wasps and Irish were the
most notable clubs using soccer grounds. Bristol groundshare
too, but the same person owns both clubs...
French clubs have the huge advantage that their stadia are
generally municipally owned, so they don't pay for most of the
upkeep and capital expenses but the owner isn't quite so focused
on turning a profit from their tenant. Plus, big parts of France
have rugby as the primary sport or at least competitive with
soccer, which can't be said of England.
