In an otherwise forgettable victory for Harlequins, it was the
work of two 21-year-old Englishmen, on their first Premiership
starts, which stood out against a spirited if limited Newcastle
side whose winless streak in England’s top league will stretch
to 561 days when the Falcons welcome Leicester to Kingston Park
next Saturday.
Hooker Nathan Jibulu and wing Cassius Cleaves, both former
England under-20s stars, shone brightest in Harlequins’
bonus-point victory, with the latter orchestrator-in-chief for
two of the hosts’ tries – for Leigh Halfpenny and Will Porter –
before limping off with a hamstring issue. How ecstasy can turn
to agony and how Harlequins, after this display, hope that the
prognosis is positive.
“The injury is devastating,” said Danny Wilson, Harlequins head
coach. “We are about giving an opportunity to young players who
earn it. This year is about making sure we increase our depth. I
hope to God it’s only a minor injury but when a wing pulls up
with a hamstring it’s never a good sign.”
Up front, Jibulu went the full 80 minutes for Harlequins – a
rarity nowadays in the front row - but that was because
Halfpenny was struggling with a shoulder issue at full-back, so
a replacement was held back in order to avoid risking dropping
to 14 men. Nonetheless, Jibulu found himself on the scoresheet –
opening Harlequins’ account from a driving maul – and had a 100
per cent record at the lineout, won turnovers and was still
carrying like a Sherman tank in the 78th minute. Two minor
errors aside, the hooker impressed.
“I think we were 100 per cent at the lineout and they got off
the floor and competed,” Wilson added. “That’s his bread and
butter but outside of that he’s a beast. Mark my words, he’s one
for the future. He’s got a lot of developing to do but he’s
extremely powerful. If we get this right, like Fin Baxter, and
expose him to the right amount of rugby at the right time, then
he can do a lot in the game.”
Harlequins, marshalled by Marcus Smith in what Wilson described
as his “pre-season match”, had the bonus point wrapped up inside
41 minutes but then failed to score for the remaining 39. It was
that sort of afternoon at the Stoop where, once Newcastle’s
punchy start had been overcome, it felt flat and routine. A late
Ben Redshaw score flattered the visitors, in truth.
“We did really well to contain them,” said Steve Diamond,
Newcastle’s consultant director of rugby, after his side’s 23rd
consecutive Premiership defeat. “We were beaten by a better
side. We were a lot better than we’ve been over the last two
years. The detail let us down today – work-rate, spirit and
fitness were really good. We’ll get that win.”
Newcastle’s start caught everyone by surprise, including the
stadium announcer who immediately blasted the music at the Stoop
before realising, contrary to expectation, that it was the
visitors who had scored and not the hosts.
John Hawkins crossed to give Newcastle an early lead before
Harlequins took control through Jibulu and Will Evans from close
range; Halfpenny and Porter were later on the end of Cleaves’s
magic. Hopefully the wing is casting those spells again soon.

It says Attendance was 12,076? I thought it was a sell out?
Also, have you ever tried to get Attendance figures for The
Stonex? I can't find any....

It's due to Season tickets, the 12,076 would be number through
the gate. Not all non-attendee STs get returned for re-sale, and
not all that are get re-sold, but still count towards a 'sell
out' gate.

That still seems low. Would mean there were ~2500 empty seats.
It didn't feel like it.
