He's also new to the squad and I think it takes time for a front
row to gel.
I was looking more at the bench props though.

Looks a good team to me, great bench to give options if we need
it.
Only worry is the lack of CCS and Chisholm. Means the pack just
lack that extra bit of oomph.
Pleased to see Els involved. Hoping he can get a run as I think
he could be useful.

Yes. Because I remember what happened the last time we had a run
like that, and it's a disadvantage that other teams haven't been
lumbered with.

You do realise that, as a consequence, we will also get more
longer turnarounds?

Professional rugby is geared around a 7 day turnaround that
allows for a mix of light / recovery days and heavier training
days to maintain conditioning.
A 6 day schedule is doable, but one of the days has to be
dropped. A team that has only had 6 days is at a (small)
relative disadvantage to an opponent that has had 7. That
compounds when a team has multiple quick turnarounds in
succession. In particular, the risk of injury goes up and the
overall energy levels the team can muster tends to decline.
A longer than 7 day turnaround allows a little more time for
recovery but not enough to offset that impact.
Also, we don’t get more longer recovery periods within the
initial Prem block, because it’s so short. We get three matches
in 12 days, a 9 day gap before Saracens, then another 6 followed
by an 8, and then it’s into the Prem Cup.
In that block of matches, every other team also gets at least
two 8 day turnarounds except for Bath and Sarries - but then
they only have one 6 day turnaround each.

While poorfour does seem to have a thing about this, it does
seem rather poor that it affects Quins quite so much.
It is inevitable though with a number of restrictions on teams
playing at certain times. Last time this came up, Exeter can’t
play on Friday nights, nor can Sarries. We can’t play on
Saturdays when the big stoop is at full capacity for
internationals. Just seems that we’ve got the sticky end of it
which is a bit of a pain this season.

The amount of 7.45 Friday night kick offs is a big reason why it
puts me off from getting a season ticket, or attending many
games at the stoop.
Last year I did the Sale game, but then my train went up the
spout because of half a cm of snow on the rails which meant it
was far too dangerous, so all services were cancelled. Nothing
beats a 3pm Saturday; or even a Sunday to an extent, but I guess
that’s the tv money coming in to play

Surely it's not beyond the wit of coaching teams to realise that
they're not going to get 7 day turnarounds every week with games
being played over Fri, Sat and Sun, so perhaps developing a
strategy that encompasses 6, 7, 8 and even 9 day turnarounds
might be appropriate, instead of just saying - 6 days? Ok we'll
lose a day - 8 days? Meh, no idea.
And where does the idea that 7 days is the optimal turnaround
period come from? It seems rather too coincidentally close to a
week to me.
Also, look at the games; we get 1 less day than Newcastle whom
we play at home and if we can't beat them we're wasting our time
anyway. Then we get 6 days before Saints, who also get 6 days
(and got spanked last night!), followed by 9 days against
Saracens who only get 7 days. Obviously, that gives Sarries the
optimal turnaround whereas we just get two days to waste, I see
that.
It seems a bit of a stretch to suggest we are being
significantly disadvantaged. It does give you the opportunity to
get your excuses in early, though - and there's always the ref!

I'm expecting a tight game tomorrow. Our bench looks marginally
stronger, which I hope is telling.
Fingers crossed the return of Kenningham plus Lewies starting
sees our lineout functioning consistently again. It was a real
achilles heel last season.
