As a Glasgow supporter, I'd certainly hope this is true of the
SRU. I fully recognise the sporting integrity/meritocracy
arguments - but they don't work for us. We have an extremely
limited player pool at professional level, and even a year spent
in the wilderness of division 2, with precious little TV money,
lower gate and sponsorship revenue, and playing the likes of
Newcastle, Zebre and the Welsh teams every single week would be
disastrous not just for Glasgow but for professional rugby in
Scotland. We need the money, and playing at least 7 games a
season against the South African teams and top 3 Irish teams is
making us a better, more physically abrasive team - which will
hopefully transfer to the national team.

I am sure that the French wouldn't be interested.
They play for the Brennus Shield which is pretty prestigious.
(It would be like trying to scrap the FA Cup).
