Should we be concerned about the proposed tax raid on private
schools?
In rugby, England picked 31 players during the Six Nations, with
29 educated in the country; 19 of these (66 per cent) went to

You need to consider how many were going to private school
anyway, and how many were on scholarships due to their sporting
or other abilities.

That's definitely a factor - a reasonable proxy would be to look
at which rugby players went to private school for the 6th form
only

That’s important as a number of players end up in private
schools to develop them, the facilities and support being
lacking in their state school and club. Kyle Sinckler for
example started in a local club which had only started a few
years earlier and attended a state school which until he helped
start it didn’t play rugby. As he developed he moved clubs and
got a scholarship at Epsom College. Lewis Ludlum had a similar
school switch. Although not typical I think many potential
Premiership players in state schools will be found scholarships
in rugby playing private schools. Ellis Genge moved from state
school to Hartbury College at 16 so a slightly different route.

You've mixed up two aspects of Sinckler's history there - he
started a rugby club at his school, but did a lot of his early
club rugby at Battersea Ironsides, which is a club with a long
history. But he did get a scholarship once the RFU had pointed
out to Quins that there was a talented kid outside their usual
scouting domains.
The general principle of promising kids finding scholarships to
private school once they get noticed for rugby holds truel,
though I've never been quite sure whether it's the schools
looking at the EPDG rosters or the clubs pointing players to
schools.
In the women's game it's oddly the other way round - we sent Ms
Poorfour Maj to a private senior school because (at the time) it
was the only school within our reach and budget that could offer
her rugby coaching, but she's going to a state 6th form college
next year because the best established girls' U18 rugby
programmes (and formerly the Quins Centre of Excellence) are at
state schools.

I don't know about scholarships, but Worthing College seems to
have a very strong track record of girls coming to do one sport
(especially, for some reason Italian gymnasts) and being
converted to rugby.

Battersea Ironsides was founded at the end of the 2nd World War,
originally a Royal Tank Regiment team. However minis only
started in the mid 1990s and Colts a little later. When I was a
minis coach at Ironsides Kyle was already playing a couple of
age grades up from us. I think he started at U10s or U11s. When
he went to Graveney he badgered a teacher to start a rugby team.
A couple of years later my son played for Graveney but Kyle had
gone to Epsom College by the time he was in the senior school
side,so he was unfortunate not to get to play with Kyle. It was
definitely Ironsides first Graveney second.

The relevant bit is that most private schools are registered
charities. As such, they have to demonstrate they are actually
doing charitable things. Scholarships are a significant part of
that. Other activites are things like sharing facilities with
local clubs/teams etc, community involvement etc. My school had
a had a high quality athletics track installed when I was there
and the local club would use it a couple of nights a week during
summer - same with the swimming pool.
If the charitable status is removed then their obligation to do
any of the above is also removed. I don't imagine any of it
would stop at first but if financial pressure increased then it
would be an obvious target.
