Here are the “interesting” views at the end of the article:
So what is the verdict on a full season of the Steve Borthwick
coaching era? I must admit to be becoming impressed with
Borthwick’s talking and walking. He does get a head of steam and
a high level of organisation about his men and it is hardly his
fault that nearly 20 years of either relative shambles or
complete shambles has cost England momentum and a proper flow of
players. And like Gareth Southgate, he has brought much-needed
balance and honour to international sport.
Itoje spoke after the game with typical courage. It is true to
say that even he ran low on energy towards the end, and it is a
matter of exhaustion and morality that England ignored the
strictures on player welfare so that he could play. But he and
Martin can be inked in, and there are enough back-row forwards
in the squad to form an excellent back five.
But other areas have stubbornly failed to fall into place.
Marcus Smith put up two kicks that led to England tries in areas
of the field completely de-populated of black jerseys, but again
he took way too much on his shoulders, was way too flighty,
delivering passes to check the next man, not to release him.
And in the final analysis, like most rugby analysis, England’s
future will come down to the development of a proper scrummage
to replace Joe Marler and Dan Cole, and nothing is remotely as
important as finding two or, better still, four great emerging
props. Bevan Rodd should have started for his all-round
strengths up front.
And who cares how, but they have to add the sensational Jack
Willis to their back row. The charging Ollie Sleightholme, who
was impressive when he was brought on to the wing, should be
given the next chance in place of Immanuel Feyi-Waboso.
England have a great spirit and a fine leader in Jamie George.
At their best they are top five in the world, although they can
also dip into mediocrity. They have a series of monster teams to
meet in the autumn, so we wish Borthwick and company the very
best. They have become a good England team, the best since the
World Cup semi-final in 2019, but so far, they are lacking the
sustained success and silverware to call themselves excellent.
They had the chance to (figuratively) level Eden Park to the
ground. They could not take it.

Ah good, a 19 year old tighthead who hasn't played a minute of
premiership rugby.
It's infuriating that Jones continues to steal a living.

Maybe we should make him England head coach and watch it all
implode all around him? Won't be his fault, of course, will be
the RFU or the players.
Slade - can't 1 on 1 tackle, as proved when he chases kicks down
and let's wingers/full backs step him in close quarters
Freeman - hasn't translated his club form to the national team
as yet, but will improve with competition in the squad
F Smith - Good player but can't yet produce the magic moments
that make a difference.....good if you want territory
Rodd - Is starting to become the new Mako, looks great around
the field but coughs up scrum penalties on demand
Fasogbon - haven't seen enough (any, really) of him but tight
head is an issue
Back Row - still not balanced. Earl IS NOT AN 8....his own club
don't play him at 8 and he won't play 8 for the Lions. I never
think this concept of "get the best players on the pitch" ever
works and doesn't bring sustained success. Pick day in, day out
6, 7, 8s and it will look better. Ardie Savea is more than just
a run and tackle machine, he has great skills and can link the
attack and this is where the position is going. 3 times on
Saturday he went on brainless runs trying to bullock through 3
defenders when a pass was on. Dombrandt, Savea, even Mercer mix
it up so that they keep the oppo guessing. Put him back to 7 and
let him do what he's good at. I can't actually recall him or
Underhill dominating the breakdown at all in either game so,
again, not balanced.
Lot's of good things to build on and I think that if the
Saint's/Bath players hadn't played against Japan, we'd have had
a better performance out of them in the two AB tests and
probably wouldn't have lost Furbank for the second test. So have
a good rest over the next 6 weeks and build up to the Autumn
series which I think we can really do well in.
As for Stephen Jones......unless people stop buying the Times
and stating him as the reason, it'll never change

I read quite a few of the player ratings from different
newspapers and websites. Almost uniform was the praise for
Marcus, even describing his play as "magic". Almost uniform. The
one detractor I could find was Jones. Does he really think every
other journalist/pundit/expert is wrong, and he's the only one
that's right?

I think Jones has a touch of his namesake maaaaate about him, in
that he warms his own heart with the thought that he sees things
others are too unsophisticated to see themselves.

Jones seems like one of those conspiracy theorists in that their
personality type is usually of lower intelligence but they like
people to think that they are clever because they think they
have information that very few other people possess. This makes
them feel superior . Everybody else thinks they’re a ————(
rhymes with cat)
