Both sides make one enforced change with loosehead prop Fin

Marler

England have sought clarity from World Rugby on New Zealand’s
scrummaging technique ahead of the second Test at Eden Park on
Saturday.
Both teams make one enforced change with loosehead prop Fin
Baxter making his first England start in place of the injured
Joe Marler while scrum-half Finlay Christie comes in for TJ
Perenara for New Zealand.
Experts, including Telegraph Sport columnist Brian Moore,
television commentator David Flatman and Harlequins scrum coach
Adam Jones, have questioned the legality of All Blacks loosehead
Ethan De Groot’s action in the first Test that New Zealand won
16-15 in Dunedin. Moore wrote that “Ethan de Groot was illegally
shifting outside Will Stuart and driving straight upwards” which
helped give New Zealand the upper hand at the scrum.
England have since received feedback from World Rugby on the
scrum and England head coach Steve Borthwick will speak to
referee Nic Berry in a scheduled call tonight to relay their
concerns. “What people have said is out there and pretty clear
to see and we have had some good feedback from World Rugby
around what their take on it was,” captain Jamie George said. “I
think we have every confidence in Nic Berry making sure that he
makes the right call this weekend.
“Looking back on it, I think we can do a better job at getting
to the contest quicker but at the same time we need to control
what we can control. That’s the main point. In doing that, we
talked about being aggressive and physical and confrontational.
That’s what we need to make sure we do. Technically as a front
row, there are things that we can do to make sure the pictures
are clearer so that’s what we have been focusing on”
Berry was the assistant referee at the Forsyth Barr Stadium last
week and while Borthwick was at pains not to criticise the
officiating, he is still keen to seek clarity over the
scrummaging contest. “We’ll ask him the areas he has seen and
what his view of the game this weekend will be,” Borthwick said.
“Clearly, the scrum will be one of those areas we will ask for
his view on. We will ask for Nic Berry’s perspective and we will
obviously put forward what we have seen, and have a
conversation. That’s the approach we always have with the
officials.”
Asked about the accusations of illegality against De Groot, All
Blacks head coach Scott Robertson replied: “Look, I think we’ve
got to be better in some pictures. Both sides can have that
conversation can’t they? We’ve worked on it this week.”
Baxter was thrown on for his debut 17 minutes into the first
Test at the Forsyth Barr Stadium when Marler suffered a foot
injury and George said that he did not look out of place in the
Test arena. “What impressed me was that he just took everything
in his stride,” George said. “It is a difficult situation, we
were under pressure scrum-time when Joe went off and for him to
come on as a 22-year-old it can be quite daunting. You can sit
back and think I will ease my way into this. He threw himself
into it. What impressed me the most was his scrummaging is
strong. He is a very strong kid and has a huge future in this
game. His work index, the way he moved around the field, was
very impressive.”
At the opposite end of the age spectrum, tighthead prop Dan Cole
will become England’s most capped male forward if he comes on as
a replacement, while loosehead Bevan Rodd comes into the
matchday squad.
England are determined to make up for their missed opportunities
that cost them a first Test win in New Zealand since 2003.
However, the All Blacks are defending a 30-year unbeaten record
at Eden Park.

Watched the game on replay with Ms Poorfour Maj (who, being a
teenager, struggled to appreciate that it was worth getting up
for), and one of the things that stood out was how much Baxter
did around the park. His defensive positioning looked good, he
hit a fair few rucks and I don't think he got enough credit for
how clever his carrying was. He didn't run into many brick
walls, but he slipped the first tackle several times and threw
some nice little offloads. I'd even go so far as to say there
was something Nick Easterish about it.
The scrums were mostly a mess - and it was amusing to read NZ
media coverage claiming that Marler had conned the All Blacks
out of the first penalty by scrummaging illegally. Though it
would explain a lot if setting square and balanced counts as
illegal scrummaging in their neck of the woods...

I'm trying to remember without re-watching but didn't Joe absorb
the hit on the first scrum so it looked like NZ went early? I
think it was a free kick rather than a full pen.
Very canny and something you can only do once but more of a show
of experience than illegal.

Marcus bossing it judging by radio commentary. Jones couldn’t
praise any Quins player even if they single handedly won the
World Cup. He is a comedy writer. If we keep up the pressure
maybe the Allblacks will get anxious about being that team that
lost the record and make more desperate plays.

Some good performances so far. Some less so. George hasn't been
too effective. Steward not good. Seems to keep getting caught
and making minimal yards.
ABs defense is very good. Shame their first try wasn't reviewed
for Savea having a knee on the ground.
Otherwise, ref seems to be having a good game.
