Lingerie company Bluebella say campaign is intended to show that
girls ‘can look muscular and strong as well as feeling feminine’

Martina Navratilova has led a backlash against a “regressive”
campaign featuring Team GB’s Olympic rugby players in lingerie.
Sharron Davies, the former swimmer, and Mara Yamauchi, the
former British distance runner, also expressed dismay at a
photoshoot purporting to change perceptions that “strong female
form is not ‘feminine’”.
Ellie Boatman, Jasmine Joyce and Celia Quansah – all part of the
Great Britain sevens squad (although Quansah has not made the
final cut for the Paris Olympics) – were signed up by lingerie
company Bluebella’s #StrongIsBeautiful campaign. The company
said the intention of the photoshoot, which showed the three
players in lingerie on the playing field, is to show girls “how
they can look muscular and strong, as well as feeling feminine”.
However, the campaign appears to have backfired, with
Navratilova, who won 18 major singles tennis titles, and other
leading campaigners for women’s sport unimpressed. Navratilova
said the campaign “feels really regressive and sexist to me”.
Women In Sport claim 64 per cent of secondary schoolgirls drop
out of all sport because of insecurities about their bodies
during puberty.
But Davies and Yamauchi said the campaign will not help tackle
this issue. Davies wrote on X: “What the actual ---- this is an
utterly shameful campaign, whose braindead idea was this? Oh
yeah let’s get professional female sports women in porn
underwear! Extremely regressive… stereotypes yet again.”
Yamauchi said that the campaign is “exploitative, demeaning,
sexist, regressive rubbish”. “Of course the intended audience is
men,” she added. “Portraying women as sex objects will not
encourage teenage girls into sport.”
The #StrongIsBeautiful campaign has been running for the past
eight years and has previously included female athletes for the
Rio and Tokyo Olympics.
Boatman, 27, said in an Evening Standard article: “Sometimes you
would even hear parents telling their boys to target the girl
because she would be the weak link in the team. It was also
definitely the case that the boys were celebrated a lot more and
all the effort was focussed on them. Little or no expense would
be made for girls’ facilities and I would be given boys’ kit,
which would absolutely swamp me.”

Why not compare the comments of those participating in the
campaign? Boatman's comments certainly reflect my frustrations
when I was involved in club and county girls' development
programmes.

This statistic is a very valid point
"The trio have joined lingerie company Bluebella’s
#StrongIsBeautiful campaign to show girls “how they can look
muscular and strong, as well as feeling feminine”.
Some 64 per cent of secondary schoolgirls drop out of all sport
before the age of 16, according to Women In Sport, many due to
insecurities about their bodies during puberty."

I've seen some pretty nuanced takes on this from former players
and some journos who cover women's rugby.
I guess my own take is that yeah okay it's essentially
advertising lingerie but it's a bunch of extremely fit and
powerful women who look extremely fit and powerful while wearing
lingerie. To me it doesn't feel exploitative or anything you'd
see in a lads mag - my opinion is that it shows them in a very
positive light as powerful athletes first and foremost.

I recognise this from my daughters playing, though with a wry
smile. Ms Poorfour Maj was the biggest and strongest player in a
team that comprised mostly small, fast boys. On one tour to
Wales, one of the opposing dads was indeed telling the boys to
target her, but mostly because she was the only player making
headway against their defence. It's still a matter of parental
pride to remember him shrieking "Tackle the freak round the
legs!" over and over.
But on a more serious note, it's only in the last two seasons or
so that she's been able to buy shorts that are cut for her legs.
Previously she had to buy a couple of sizes up and cinch in the
waist tightly.

Not sure what the fuss is. Joe Marler advertised men's
underwear. Sports stars advertise clothing all the time. As long
as the women are happy to do it, good for them. Presumably
they're earning extra money too.

Yeah I mean this is just weird. It's a lingerie advert, what are
they meant to do? Just not employ them?

I do find it quite rich that swimsuit wearing darling, Sharon
Davies, who took model agency money for two decades to be in a
bikini most of the time, has an issue with rugby players in
lingerie. She's also had lots of work done on her body and face
in the last decade to make her still look like she did in her
20s but is now worried about the impact on young girls re their
body image???
I think they look great and if a young girl chooses to play
rugby and see's them, I hope they are buoyed by it and that big
and muscular can also be beautiful. My two daughters have come
late to gods own game and plan on playing when they get to Uni
and they thought the photo's were good. I follow Kat Merchant on
Twitter/X and she get's dog's abuse for it. She courts some to
be fair but still doesn't deserve the abuse hurled at her.
Not everyone can look like Taylor Swift or Ariana Grande or any
other celeb of choice so embrace the differences.

Navratilova is a feminist and gay which may be colouring her
comments a little.

Perhaps millionairess Martina wants to pay the girls the same
money that Bluebella is paying the girls just to stop them
regressing. Has anyone thought that the girls modelling the
lingerie know exactly what they are doing and are putting some
good cash in the bank, there’s not a lot of money in women’s
rugby. I’m not hearing anyone moaning about male rugby players
modelling buddy smugglers.
