Another new signing - Nic Haynes joining from Sarries.
And Ella Cromack, Tyla Shirley and Katie Shillaker will be
playing for the England Pathway team against Wales in the 6N
Summer Series tomorrow - live on the England Rugby Facebook page

Emma Swords (re)signed.
I note that Saracens kicked off their signings and departures
news yesterday with Nic Heynes, which suggests there may be more
moves to come in the market - it seems unlikely that Quins are
so far ahead of the game that we've completed our recruitment
while others are ongoing.

I think a few more will be coming in. We need a FH for a start
(only have 1 on the books). I think there might be some movement
in the second row also

We've got Ella Cromack (who put in a Player of the Match
performance for the U20s vs Wales last nght, with some pinpoint
crossfield kick passes) and Freya Bell. We probably do need a
third, but my sense is that they are backing Cromack as the lead
FH.
Likewise, we've got 6 locks on the books, 4 of whom are
internationals. I'll add a section to the top post to reorganise
the squad by position so it's easier to see.

I've reorganised the squad list by position. There's good
coverage in most positions but the standard seems to be to have
around 6 players to cover each position, which makes us a bit
light at lock, fly half and centre.
That said, it's much more common for female players to have a
degree of positional flexibility. Watching the U20s game last
nigh, Niamh Swailes, the starting hooker, outpaced the Welsh
outside centre and stepped the fly half (who was in the fullback
position) to score from near halfway. I doubt even a hooker as
dynamic as Aumua or Dan could do that in the men's game.
I was discussing this with Ms Poorfour Maj at the time. She made
the point that female players have a narrower spread of body
types than male ones, especially in upper body development, and
because there are far fewer players who can dominate through
power alone, there's more of a premium on pace and handling
skills. Which in turn makes it easier for players to convert
from one position to another.

I know Laurie said the Women’s side was in transition but this
is open heart surgery! Clearly identified something very wrong
in the playing group - and maybe not just age profile. Feeling
hopeful assuming they get time to gel.

I think that’s an overly pessimistic view. So far they’ve
recruited one more player than retired or went elsewhere. It was
pretty clear by the end of the season that Quins needed more
carrying power, and the recruitment looks to have been focused
on that. Quins also have a lot of very young players, and lost a
lot of old hands, which this recruitment rectifies a bit.

Quins won’t find it quite so easy for recruitment since
Trailfinders came on to the scene and look to be putting much
effort into improving their squad. Things have changed since the
demise of Wasps and many more clubs are putting decent resources
behind their squads. If Quins can get a young squad into a
competitive shape then they can do very well. Older players tend
to move around more as they get good offers if they’ve played
for England. They also may be well into careers that take them
round the country. Youngsters are normally studying in one place
for a few years or are still living with parents .
