Updated with today’s re-signings, other squad players who have
not yet been the subject of announcements and international
honours where I could find them.
I also thought it might be interesting to look at what the
strongest XXIII we could put out next season would be, assuming
everyone not subject to an announcement is staying. I think it
would look something like this:
Cornborough (Eng) Powell (Eng) Latsha (SA)
Bonar (Sco) Leaney (Aus)
Cooney (Ire) Harper (Eng)
Konkel (Sco)
Packer (Eng) Cromack
Tuima (Eng) Peña Hidalgo (Spain)
Cowell (Eng) Kildunne (Eng) Shillaker
Phillips (Wal) Hanlon (Eng) Turani (Ita)
Fleming (Wal) Millar-Mills (Eng)
Aucken Bell Layzell
That’s quite a strong squad, although given the strength of the
current Red Roses squad most of the Quins players are on the
fringes. Of the wider squad, a lot of the rest of them have come
through the Centre of Excellence system.

I like the inclusion of Shillaker, poorfour. She is very young
but looks to be a great prospect.

She was the one I hesitated over the most - Quins have a lot of
options in the back three but not yet clear first choices beyond
Kildunne. Shillaker impressed me in her appearances so far,
though.

Poorfour - I think (AND HOPE) that Heather Cowell will be back
with us for a full season after the Olympics. She is, arguably,
the fastest back in England.

Did Cornborough retire from all rugby or just interenationals?

Info on female players is a bit patchy - even on the offy things
like international honours aren't consistently recorded - but as
far as I can tell she has only mentioned stepping down from
internationals.

Watching the RWC25 qualifying decider between Wales and Spain.
My observations are coloured by the fact that all the commentary
is in Welsh, but I am pretty sure that new Quins signing Claudia
Pena Hidalgo scored to take Spain (briefly) into the lead, and
I’ve learned that Lisa Neumann (about whom there is almost no
info on offy) is a Welsh international.
I’ve also added where a player has come through one of the
Centres of Excellence (mostly through Quins - and quite a few
players who came through the Quins CoE, joined a different PWR
team when at uni and then came back - but a couple through
Richmond or Wasps)

Two new signings so far this week in Mueller and Svoboda -
clearly strengthening the back row is a priority.

And another signing - Alex Callender, Welsh VC, is a good
addition to the squad. We've now signed 7 vs 9 departing. In
terms of balance, recruitment has focused on the back row, which
I think is probably where Quins were most lacking last season.
We seem to be relying on the younger players to step up in the
backs, which I think reflects the talent coming through. One
slight area of concern is that the only out and out inside
centre I can see in the squad is Lagi Tuima, with most of the
other players being wing/centre type players. Burford played IC
a lot in the matches where I can find the team lists last
season, so it would be nice to think that Quins have someone
lined up to share the burden with Tuima.

Maybe copying the men’s side and not really bothering with 12 if
the only one is injured.
