A couple of signings from Chiefs announced so far this week - I
suspect there will be a few more to come, especially as Quins
have lost more backs than forwards.

Claudia Pena Hidalgo of Barcelona and Spain 7s to join as a
Centre.
Only a few key signings but with the re-signing of some exciting
Academy graduates, the squad starts to feel a bit more balanced.

A few encouraging signings and re signings. Would like to see
another quality prop and lock come in. If Cowell and Torley are
around next season then great (pending 7s commitments), if not a
quality wing would be great.

I am not sure how many players will be brought in versus
developed internally - the market is nowhere near as mature as
the men's market, so there are fewer players available. In
particular the overseas market is nowhere near as developed,
which is why we have moves like bringing in Bibi Latsha as South
Africa's first professional 15s player, or bringing in Claudia
from Spain 7s.
I also suspect that there's a little horse trading going on
between teams - it's interesting that we've lost two players to
Chiefs (and I have heard from people closer to them than me that
the Robinsons weren't entirely happy with the move) and received
two players back in return.
Until there's a deeper pool of pro players, I still think we'll
mostly promote from within - though it's not quite clear how the
future player pipeline will work. With the RFU centralising the
Player Development Groups, I don't yet know (and I am not sure
anyone does) whether clubs will have first call on players from
specific regions, or whether there will be some level of central
co-ordination to allocate talent to where it is most needed.

Can you elaborate on that? And are you referring to the old
system, or the new one coming in this summer?
I’m genuinely interested. Ms Poorfour Maj is at the start of the
programme - she’s played county rugby for the last 3 years, got
scouted through that to join the Worthing rugby programme and
will have trials for the new Player Development Groups over the
summer.
I’m keen to understand as much as possible about what does and
doesn’t work in the system so we can work around it.
