A lot of people are hanging their hats on a statement Lawrie
made about spending upto the Cap a couple of months ago at the
Quinssa Q&A - interesting he wasn't asked the question again in
this latest missive. I think several things might have changed
       since his initial statement:-
       1) Several other Prem clubs have subsequently announced they
won't be spending upto the cap next year
       2) The club clearly feels that there isn't a suitable
replacement available for Andre at the right price
       3) Recruitment of a defence coach is a priority - if it's
Sinfield we don't know what the cost is
       4) There's a clear drive towards break even/profitabilty for the
operation of the Club as a whole
Whilst as fans we tend to be preoccupied with incoming/outgoing
players and utilisation of the Cap, the Club remains a business
that is striving to be profitable and the Players remuneration
is only part of the overall operating costs for the business.

Only one incoming signing might be underwhelming, but it’s
relative. When you look around the league, the trend is
definitely a much higher number of outgoing players:
  HTML https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_2024%E2%80%9325_Premiership_Rugby_transfers
As others have said, LI’s collapse basically meant we did our
business very early. If having a quiet transfer window is the
cost of keeping CCS and Joseph who should both be a big part of
our future, I’m OK with that.
Look at the outgoings for Saints - Lawes and Ludlam are as
important to them as the players were losing and even if Moon
and the Wallers aren’t big names, they’re still regular
starters. With the exception of Kemeny and West, their incoming
signings are academy promos and youngsters.
Gloucester are really the only side with big names coming in
(Williams, Anscombe and Wade), but I’d argue 2 out of those 3
       are well past their best.
IMO, Tigers have probably done the best business landing Perese,
Beets and Smith but again, these are good rather than stellar
       signings.
Even Saracens have signed players with potential rather than the
star names they used to bring in.

If the plan is to have no marquee player then really that is
just a way for the club to manipulate the facts to claim they
are paying up to the cap when they are not. Or have I
       misunderstood what you’re saying?
And I very much hope the likes of Els (who has barely seen the
match day squad) Chisholm (who is a significant injury
liability) and Care (in the twilight of his career) are not
getting increased salaries. If anything, they should have been
signed on reduced terms. Sure, there’s a few young/academy lads
who will earn a little extra but I can’t see that touching the
sides of the significant wages of Esterhuizen, let alone a £1m
       increase in the cap.
Edit: I guess CCS is going to cost us a fair bit extra moving
       forward.

Seeing the academy guys coming through, they look impressive.
Ollie Streeter seems an absolute monster at tighthead, and I can
see a front row of him, Baxter and Jibulu being a phenomenal
       unit.

Am still not convinced about Northmore at 12. Nothing to do with
Andre but he just seems so much better at 13 and coming off the
pass from the line but if we move away from the crash ball 12,
then I can see why else go with a Lenny, Bryn, Haydn combo. We
can always buy in if that doesn't work out .
It's great bringing through all of this talent but if we don't
use it, we lose it and then start to regret it.
Now the controversial bit, I don't buy into the cult of
Sinfield. One good season at Tigers, which actually felt more
down to the players, as proved in the following season. A shaky
term with England when the defence wasn't great but played up in
a couple of big games at the WC. His extra-curricular activities
are clearly a big part of his life and being an international
coach, you can do that but as a club coach it's not so easy as
you need someone living and breathing it and I don't think
       that's him.
Not sure who else is out there but would rather go with an
       unknown entity.

Its always interesting when we have this debate. The people who
say this never seem to want to factor in wages decreasing as
       players pass their prime.
A million is a lot of money in rugby player terms.

Joseph? On what basis? Thus far he been no more than a bit part
player for us. Possibly more than that next season if we are
indeed moving northmore to 12, which seems mental to me.

Cool. Which academy player is coming straight in to replace test
       winger lynagh's 1 in 2 hit rate?
And Care is getting a payrise? And Chis? Who would have been
expected to have played much more at their previous
       negotiations?
